A 1%er to me means an outlaw biker, right. These people cannot be fully trusted at all. Your neighbor has given you warning. If the gang says take you down they have little choice or usually conscience in the matter.

I understand cadre' completely, and blood is thicker than mud but not when it's for evil. My enemy is anybody who can get me killed either through direct action, neglect or incompetence.

Seems to be a lot of talk today about me and mine and heck with everybody else. Not good neighbors at all. Street smarts is a good thing, as are priorities, but thuggery is not.

Have some good folks around here. This one has been away from them but is still obligated. I know exactly who he is and what he was saying. If I break down on my bike I would call him and he will drop what he is doing and lend a hand getting the bike to his shop and help with repairs. I would do the same. I do not resent his views and I understand what he is capable of. HE knows I do not lie.

When shtf, you have to depend on family and friends that have gathered around you and have made the commitment to stand with you. 1%ers have been practicing that from the 40's. Some have strayed, some have returned to the path. But they have proven themselves to each other. Do we not strive to have the same thing? Loyalty from those that have gathered.

"Trust but verify." Verification is thru actions, case extant. The problem is obvious, the actions may come too late. Vetting the squad might not be possible ahead of time. It isn't easy to vet a compadre without stress testing. Other than the military there are very few workable ways to do that. Take care in selection of running mates.

Call and tell them that your truck is hanging on the edge of the cliff and you need some help getting it safe. Oh , its 0300 and you know he is finalizing a date.

Theres always faith that go's along with trusting people. Unlike the clubs, we can not have our "prospects" go out and beat or knife someone to prove themselves. We can say we are having a problem and who is it that comes through with an offer and shows up to lend that hand. Espesialy if it is an inconvenience to them. Do not take advantage and have the BBQ and beer as payment on hand. You try and do most of the work and see if they throw themselves into the task at hand.

Re1%ers as survival buddies.. ..it cannot be assumed that group loyalty and group cohesion can be taken for granted. Like most groups, 1%ers have their internal group tensions and power struggles, and as often as not, resolving them can be brutal.

I have no doubt that 1%ers have a moral compass of some kind, but not the kind of moral compass I would like to be guided by. Being a member of a pack of rapacious hyenas might work for some, until the pack turns on its own.

Eloquently stated as ever. They have their own rules. Their loyalty is to their brothers Only! No one else. Under normal times, I can count on this person. Under adverse times, Not a chance in h3ll..

The real question is, How do you know who you can count on?

The strongest bonds and brotherhood are usually created through family or stress under action as a team. As a Marine you know that some of the strongest bonds you have ever enjoyed were through blood, sweat and the trials endured as a team. How do you create that same bond and esprit de corps in the civilian world? I would submit it is through hard work, training as a team and being there for each of the group in good and bad times. Trust is hard to earn and the same for loyalty.... but both can be lost in a moment.

I finally got around to reading this thread ( thanks to a certain Monkey for the heads up ). It is hard to get to know and trust those you meet on the Internet. This forum is the first I found myself able to trust people with my personal details. The Mods here encourage OPSEC and the people I write back and forth too have proven themselves in my eyes in the matters we speak about.

What a great group of people and I feel truly blessed to know them and have a chance to get to know them prior to things all falling apart.

Also they put up with my occasional rants and allow me to vent prior to reaching Critical Mass.....so thanks to all.

Add ex-military guys (+ cops & feds) with questionable scruples to your list of wolves. Basically, anyone with the skills, motivation, and lack of "stuff" during TEOTWAKI will be in this group. Another great reason to never, ever, tell anyone you have more than a case of water at home.

Beware: Ex Military Soldier’s Survival Plan Is “To Hit Preppers” | Ask a Prepper

Editor’s Note: Ex-military who does not have enough money to prep says he’s going to go around and hit preppers who are too weak to defend themselves.

My thinking is that if there are people saying it out loud now… when there will be no food, no water and no active law enforcement… how many will actually turn into looters and killers?

When his child will starve to death in his arms, your now-friendly neighbor might not give a S. about your life. When you won’t have enough to help him, he might turn into your enemy. So keep your cards to yourself!

One of the tenets of long-term preparedness is something we refer to as Operational Security, or OPSEC. The goal is to build our stockpiles, strategies and friendships without the knowledge of the general public, or in many cases, even our neighbors or acquaintances.

    Why?

Because when it hits the fan, and there’s no food in grocery stores and violence erupts all around us, we’ll have the supplies to survive and the defensive initiative to protect what’s ours. The last thing we want is for those who failed to heed the warnings, to come knocking on our doors looking for handouts or a place to weather the storm. The fact is, our supplies are limited, so operating on the down-low is an important strategy to ensure our safety in the midst of disaster.

But taking the time and effort to plan effectively is not the only strategy being implemented by those who expect the worst.

There are those out there who have a different idea of how they’ll acquire necessary supplies should the system as we know it destabilize.

And that plan is to come for what you own.

Southern Prepper explains how your operational security may have already been compromised, and shares a story from one “prepper” who is planning on taking advantage of those who had the foresight to ready themselves.

He’s ex-military. He said his plan is to hit preppers. He doesn’t have enough money right now to prep himself, so he’s going to go around and hit preppers.

    So be careful.

Ends of summer, before deer season go "scouting" bring binoculars, laser rangefinder, write in the rain pad and pen.
Use google earth to locate buildings you may wish to "avoid". Record distance from cover to buildings and other landmarks. Make notes for entry & egress routes and rally points. Tape to MBR stock and distribute as needed.

It all comes down to pest control.[tongue]

I think this type of group will be short lived; having to fight for everything they eat will get them killed quickly as every prepper with a brain is armed to the teeth.

I wouldn't underestimate a group of motivated combat veterans (or well-trained LEOs) . . . and you're assuming every prepper has a brain. Maybe the first 5 they hit don't have a brain and the aggressors now have over a month's supply of food and all the prepper's guns/ammo.

How long can you defend your castle?

I tend to agree with much of what Cato says. Relying on attritional battles with other preppers to cull the wolves before the wolves get to you, rests upon the false assumptions that firstly, you are not an early target of such attritional battles, and secondly that the ex military, and LEO ex SWATTERS are going to do personal battle with you and your predecessors in every instance.

The way I see it, the core of a gang of ex military are going to act more like a Special Forces A team, providing leadership, training and specialist skills to direct and augment the bulk of the rest of the gang, who'll do the actual grunt work of looting and raping, extortion and intimidation. Just like Mafia dons...the pack leaders' exposure to personal risk will probably be minimal, relying on the desperate and hungry to do the dirty, risky donkey work. In a SHTF situation there will always be desperate and hungry people to replace the losses without putting the core group at much risk. The only way the core will suffer losses is if preppers do a little co-ordinated wolf culling, concentrating on the pack leaders.

And the acquisition of strong intel. can work both ways... Get to know folks in your AO , or about them.. People like to talk and one need not inquire about the wolves directly..
