    Due to an ongoing battle with two auto-immunity diseases (rheumatiod and psoriatic arhtritis), I didn't have much choice. I wasn't going to become the pharmaceutical companies' next guinea pig for their lifetime toxic regiment that does nothing for the cause of disease.

    I have taken the holistic/homeopathic journey in treating my disease with amazing results.

    I have been on a modified (anti-inflammatory) version of the Paleo diet since April/May 2015. Within the first three weeks I lost 25 lbs., some of this weight loss was probably from inflammation within my entire body. I would also associate some of the weight loss due to other aspects of my homeopathic healing.

    I did not make this change for weight-loss. Considering how much food I consumed on a daily basis, I should have weighed considerably more than I did. Instead of gaining a bunch of weight from the toxins I was consuming, it went full blown toxic and through my immunity system into an imbalance.

    I have always been interested in holistic medicine. Even as a teenager, I read and studied many different healing modalities. Given my love of medicine and my participation in competitive sports, it was no surprise to anyone that I became a Certified Athletic Trainer and physical therapist. Over the past 20 years in my healthcare career, I have worked in many different settings. The constants in my career have been interacting with people in pain and using all of my knowledge/skills to assist them in restoring maximum function.

    I have a special interest in working with people who experience chronic pain. As happens with many people, it took my own experience to propel me to study and learn more about how to best help this patient population. In 2007, I became very ill with what was later diagnosed as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. This is an autoimmune illness (AI) caused by the body mounting an attack on the thyroid gland in an attempt to destroy it. For those who have not heard of this illness, the thyroid is a major part of the endocrine system. It is a gland that makes and stores hormones that help regulate the heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and the rate at which food is converted into energy. Thyroid hormones are essential for the function of every cell in the body. They help regulate growth and the rate of chemical reactions (metabolism) in the body.

    It took me 5 years of researching, asking questions, and trial and error to begin to regain my health. At the urging of a colleague, I went gluten free in the fall of 2010. After 2 weeks, I felt so much better that I decided to continue avoiding gluten. As I continued to research, I found information about what was referred to as the “Paleo” lifestyle. I decided to try it in the Spring of 2011. After several months, the majority of my inflammation was reduced, my blood work showed changes in a positive direction, I began going days at a time without taking anti-inflammatory medication, and I was able to slowly begin bodyweight exercises and walking.

    After eating this way for a year now, I can say that I am never going back to eating as I did before, and I don’t have “cheat” days because my body cannot handle the effects of foods that lead to inflammation. I am passionate about sharing this knowledge with as many people as possible. The media has picked up on the term “Paleo Diet” and “Caveman Diet,” portraying it as a fad diet used to lose weight and re-enact history. My mission is to sift through the emerging research to find studies to show that there is a scientific basis behind eating this way, and to educate people that this lifestyle may be useful as an adjunct to treating AI. For me and the other 23.5 million Americans living with AI, there is hope for living a better life, based on the way we nourish and move our bodies.

    Research has shown a connection between inflammation and AI, as well as a link between modern foods and their far-reaching effects on health. In their 2004 paper titled “Origins and evolution of the Western diet: health implications for the 21st century,” Cordain et al presented data to show that diseases which are epidemic in contemporary Western countries are rare or non-existent in hunter-gatherer and less Westernized societies. They discussed data showing that Industrial era foods (dairy, refined cereals, refined vegetable oils, and fatty meats from animals prevented from grazing) underlie or exacerbate virtually all chronic diseases of civilization: 1) glycemic load, 2) fatty acid composition, 3) macronutrient composition, 4) micronutrient density, 5) acid-base balance, 6) sodium-potassium ratio, and 7) fiber content.

    Other recent research from Ganesh et al (2011) shows that the changes associated with the disease process of autoimmune thyroid disorders (AITD) are brought about by inflammatory cytokines. Cytokines serve as the software that run the immune system. A number of studies have now established that dysregulation of immune cell function causes AI such as lupus, arthritis, thyroiditis, carditits, and diabetes. It is highly likely that cytokine dysfunctions are the first step in the onset of these self-reactive immune responses. (Kalvakolanu, 2011) Additionally, Singh et al (2011) discussed the role of cytokines in the development of autoimmune diabetes (Type 1 Diabetes), Rose et al (2011) studied the sequence of events triggered by infection that lead to autoimmune myocarditis and subsequent cardiomyopathy, and Volin and Koch (2011) provided an in-depth view into the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the development of autoimmune arthritis.

    The most interesting studies that may eventually provide evidence for correlation of diet as a factor in the development of AI come from the University of Maryland’s Center for Celiac Research headed by Dr. Alessio Fasano: Center for Celiac Research & Treatment - Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA

    Dr. Fasano’s research investigates the increased intestinal permeability which often precedes disease, causing an abnormality in the antigen delivery that triggers the multi-organ process leading to an autoimmune response. Dr. Fasano’s research has shown that once gluten is eliminated from the diet, the intestine resumes its baseline barrier function, autoantibody titers are normalized, the autoimmune process shuts off, and intestinal damage heals itself. He continues to research the possibility that changes in intestinal permeability due to gluten may underlie not just Celiac Disease; but also other AI processes.

    These are exciting times for those who struggle with AI, as current research attempts to explain what thousands of people have found to be anecdotally true. As Chris Kresser, L.Ac discussed in a recent podcast Episode 4 - Hashimoto's, leaky gut & autoimmune disease the issue of intestinal permeability or ‘leaky gut’ has been made fun of for years as pseudoscience. Not to worry, the research surrounding this issue is about to explode due to the fact that the first drug to treat intestinal permeability is being developed. Once “Big Pharma” gets involved, and there is suddenly money to be made from treating this issue, the research to justify it won’t be far behind!

    It might pay you to view the program on Netflix "Rotten" , especially the full article on peanuts . Scientist are finally coming to the conclusion my dad understood 70 years ago , Allergies are cultured into a society by sterilization .

    So much bs being bandied about above, based on fantasies and false conclusions drawn from false information.
    I don't usually get involved in discussions of religion, but let me give it a go:
    As to my qualifications, I recently retired from practicing medicine for over 40 yrs, and also spent a few years raising grass-finished, "organic" (I hate that mis-applied term) beef.
    A) hormones & antibiotics used in the raising of meat livestock DO NOT appear in the finished product you eat. PERIOD. There is a required wash-out period before slaughter. Estrogen, for instance, is the "growth hormone" used on cattle, and there is 16x more estrogen in a serving of potatoes than in a serving of beef.

    b) Let's all agree (in order to avoid argument) that GMO & pesticides in foods are "no good for us." Now the the question becomes, "How bad are they?" The answer-- they have so little effect that it's lost as "noise" in the data. For comparison, remember that 40,000 Americans die each year in auto accidents. How many die from GMO disease? (Probably none)

    3) Everybody is different! (a difficult concept for the socialists among us to grasp). Some people tolerate some foods and others don't. Lactase deficiency and gluten sensitivity are two well characterized examples. There are many other more subtle and less common problems associated with diet. Only you can figure out your own and we can't argue with you about it.

    D) Processed food-- basically "already cooked by someone else." No big deal. Most of them are high in carbs and low on other nutrients. "Wasted carbs' but not unhealthy in and of themselves.

    Diabetes is a genetically predisposed condition that must meet up with excessive carb intake to show itself. I compare it to alcoholism: if you have the genes for alcoholism, you're an alcoholic even if you don't drink.You won't develop the problems of the alcoholic-- you've "taken the cure." Same for DM: if you have the genes, but don;t take in excessive carbs, the complications won't show up-- you've taken the cure. You can't "cause" diabetes by eating too much if you don't have the genes.

    The problem with vegan diets is that veggies/fruits are not very nutrient dense-- you have to eat 10+servings per day to fill your RDA. It's hard to do that if you want to "eat local" and to avoid getting excess calories. Eg: to get 60 gm protein from corn/beans/rice, you'd have to eat 3200 cal worth and risk obesity (not that there's anything wrong with that, for the non-diabetic).

    There is no such thing as a "healthy diet." There are only adequate diets and inadequate diets. Remember that Jim Fix died young while jogging and Eull Gibbons of colon cancer. It's all genetics and chance. Enjoy yourself and forget it.

    A) What's to stop a farmer/rancher from lying about said washout period? What's to stop a slaughterhouse from slaughtering an obviously ill animal and lie about it. As far as I can tell, they don't inspect them anymore. When my health declined I looked into commercial processing and a typical question they had was, "Do you want it inspected, cause it's cheaper on days the inspector ain't here."

    B)There is no data on that however being a physician you should know that allergies are on the rise. Australia has had an order of magnitude increase in anaphylaxis cases in each of the previous 2 decades. That means 100 times the incidence compared to 20 years ago. (That was as of 2005 if I recall correctly. I haven't rechecked Aussi data since) The US data and Europe shows similar trends. Also as allergies go up, autoimmune illnesses follow. Celiac disease was basically unheard of 30 years ago in the US. When I was in med school the Pathology instructor said, "Oh, you'll never see a patient with that. We're just covering it for completeness sake." Now it's 1% of the US population. Your comment about mortality ignores morbidity which at the population level is potentially more important.

    Does that prove that GMO's are the cause? No, of course not. But it also doesn't let them off the hook. We need more data.

    3) (I would have put C, but for some reason you switched to numbers there) Agree completely. As I used to tell patients, "It doesn't matter what the odds are. Whatever happens to you is 100% for you."

    D) There's processed, and then there's processed. You seem to be equating a twinkie with a bakery made slice of bread. I'm sure that's not what you are trying to say, but it could easily be interpretted that way. That's oversimplified to the point of being wrong.

    Regarding Vegan, another issue is that our data is far out of date. The fruits and vegetables in the stores today are not what was in the stores 50 years ago. Everything (almost) now is sugar enhanced.

    "adequate vs inadequate diet," I'll accept as the healthy diet discussion, but there are a lot of people out there who do eat an unhealthy diet. But yes, there will never be a perfectly healthy diet for everyone because we are all a bit different. Genetically some of us are mostly carnivore (Inuit and other Arctic Circle peoples), some are vegetarian (a few enclaves in SE Asia and India where for the last 100 generations they've been selected for a vegetarian diet), the vast majority of us fall somewhere on the spectrum between.
