Hams depend on conditions also. CB Is in the 11 Meter Band close to the Ham 10 Meter band. Where Hams have the advantage is the number of bands (10, 12, 15, 17, 20, 30, 40, 80 and 160) they have available.

The term CB and HAM Radio in the same paragraph brings a bad taste to the mouth.
    ...
Back in the day had a HAM Ticket, a First Class Commercial w/Radar. My ex Bought a couple of CB Radios for Christmas (now you know why she's an ex...). Thought it would be fun.
    ..
All my HAM Buddies turned away and laughed (for a long time).
    ..
In the 70's CB was full of blabber mouths, and 100W and 500W linears were prolific - which meant they were knocking everyone off and bleeding two-five channels up and down band.
    ...
Recently listened in on CB (after over 30 tears of ignoring it) and noticed that not much has improved.
    ..
HAMs are still the same, professional and courteous.
    ..
So I tend to not use the two terms in the same paragraph....

Because it helps CB'er get an idea of what Amateur Radio can actually do for them in terms of real time communications during a disaster etc.
A lot of people don't realize how easy it is to escape CB to a much better place.

Sad commentary on American culture degradation. Same thing happened in civil aviation, where radio channel 122.8 was the air-to-air conversational channel - two guys flying talking to each other about some subject, mostly weather, conditions at a mutual airport or other, or just friends who happened to be in the air at the same time... called the "BS freq," because all the others were strictly mission-oriented and strictly monitored by the FAA.

Young squirts in the 1980s learned they could curse, use gutter language air-to-air and not get reprimanded, at least by officialdom, and the frequency became more or less useless. Disgusting.

American culture expectations and values began circling the drain in 1956, when school integration was rammed down our throats by the federal government. Since then, cultural osmosis has resulted in the America of today.

You pour dirty water into clean water, what do you expect to get ?
