Here is my take on this vital primative skill. I didn't get to test it for longer term storage because it was so good the meat was eaten within the week.
Tractor supply has a good canvas tarp that's water proof I think 20$ tan color I love smoking meats fish pork beef shrimp chicken oysters even smoked shark Note use hard wood not pine I use white and red bay white bay is easy to split wet or dry and give your meat a pretty color other hard wood will give a dark or yellow color depends on what you use

Indeed, deer hide works, and in addition the hide gets smoked which is beneficial to its waterproofing and color.
