Backyard gun range has Island County neighbors up in arms | Seattle

“I’ve worked too hard to let it go,” said the 31-year-old garbage collector. “I will not stop shooting. It’s my right.”

First they try to take your right to bear arms. Then they try to restrict your use of weapons on your private land, with a proper firing range meeting local ordinances. Our rights are being assaulted on a daily basis locally and nationally!!!

That is a fight he will eventually lose. I was stationed In Oak Harbor on Whidbey Islandfor awhile, and it is getting pretty crowded. His area will be re-zoned by the council and that will be that.....
Too bad too....nice place to live.

With over 5 acres, this guy has more than adequate room to shoot, provided he has taken safety precautions. The outside neighborhood can grow all it wants, if he still has over 5 acres, nothing has changed. A lot of cities have indoor gun ranges for people who live in close proximity and cannot shoot out their back door. Even the old Navy Vet and NRA member, Lyons, as the article speaks of could probably listen to sound logic if he were able to...but I am betting the sound and a few words spoken from the past have sealed his focus.

He could cut down on the noise a number of ways. One of the most effective I have seen is where the shooting benches had a row of large truck tires on a rack immediately in front that you shot thru. You could be standing 50 feet away to the side or behind, and it's amazing how much quieter a high power rifle shot was muffled. If after watching a few shots, if the shooter was to step to the side and let one off down range outside of the baffles, it immediately was apparent how effective the sound suppression actually was. I have considered a similiar setup for bench rest shooting on my range. The main disadvantage to other than bench rest shooting for this set up is the eye height of a shooter is the heigth neccesary for rifle or pistol shooting, and varies greatly between shooters. Several baffles at various heigths would be neccassary for other than bench rest shooting.

Hang your baffles and they could be raised and lowered in seconds by a hoist or winch, or chain fall. I recently priced a chain fall for a half ton for no more than $30.

This was a tube of truck tires we are talking about. 6 to 10 anyway. Like shooting thru a tunnel. Worked great for bench rest. He had one for offhand as well, but he stood about 6'4". Being 6 inches shorter in height it didn't work quite so well for me.

We shoot here at the house; it is legal. Our property is too steep for decent shooting.

Neighbor down in the gorge has a range and some city people called the sheriff on him. As the neighbor is disabled the deputies built it up a little higher for him. Then shot his guns and some of mine to "test" the safety and the "city sob's hearing."
