For the last three years, Mozilla has been shaping public-interest technology through their 10-month Open Web Fellows program. Each year, the fellows work with advocacy organizations who share their belief that the open internet can make the world a better place. The Tor Project has been selected as one of the host organizations for the 2018 fellowship cohort, and applications open today.

“Civil society can have an outsized impact on the health of the internetnonprofits and institutions conduct groundbreaking research, build tools that thwart digital harassment, and protect marginalized communities online.”

Welcoming 11 New Partners in the Quest for Internet Health

    Become a Tor Relay Advocate

For the past few months, we’ve had our eyes on those parts of the world where there are fewer Tor relays. The network benefits from a diversity of relays in different parts of the world, so then do the millions of people who rely on it for privacy and freedom online. That’s why we’ll host a fellow who’ll become a Tor Relay Advocate, helping us grow the network across the globe and keep it healthy.

As the Tor Relay Advocate, you’ll support our current relay operators, encourage tech-savvy people to run relays, and help us promote internet freedom by making the Tor network stronger and more decentralized. You’ll have a bird’s-eye view of the relay community, understanding the technical, social, and legal aspects of being a relay operator.

You’ll be a good fit if you’re organized, conscientious, and comfortable managing relationships with many people across many cultures. We're looking for a people person with a great eye for detail. This position will be the dedicated point of contact for relay operators, so familiarity with how Tor relays work (or a willingness to learn before the fellowship begins) is also a must. Fluency in languages that aren’t English is a bonus.

Fellows receive a $60,000 stipend, paid in monthly installments, as well as childcare and health insurance supplements.

Apply here (select "Open Web" to be directed to the application for this fellowship).

The application period runs from today through Friday, April 20, at 5pm. If you’ve got questions, you can email tommyc(at)torproject.org or fellowships(at)mozilla.org.

We’re deeply committed to safeguarding the open internet, and we’re grateful to have Mozilla as a partner in the fight for online privacy and freedom around the world. Whether they’re helping us uplift Tor patches into Firefox, supporting our Metrics work, or matching donations during our end-of-year crowdfunding campaign, we know that Mozilla has our back.
