Listeria isn't deadly for most people; it's typically the elderly and especially pregnant women and young children who may be susceptible to the worst effects. For most healthy adults, the symptoms are diarrhea, cramping, nausea, and fever. Treatment can vary slightly, but more serious infections can be treated with common antibiotics like amoxicillin. It's quite common in various foods, from dairy and meats to anything grown in the dirt. The good news is, listeria is easily killed off with proper cooking, and if stored frozen, will inhibit further bacterial growth. People who eat raw foods are especially vulnerable, and should use caution.
