Refrigerator outage planning: record temperatures as well as power

A refrigerator backup plan needs a temperature check as well as a way to restore power. These are reference notes, not a report of a refrigerator I have tested.

Before an outage, keep an appliance thermometer in the refrigerator and freezer, record the normal readings and have a plan for moving perishables to a cold source. During an outage, keep both doors closed as much as possible and note when power was lost.

FDA says an unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for about four hours and recommends refrigerator storage at 40°F or below. Once power returns, check the thermometer and use FDA’s food-specific advice; a lit display, cool-feeling package or smell is not a food-safety test. Never taste food to decide whether it is safe.

GE’s outage guidance also explains that food holding time varies with room temperature, freshness and door openings. This is different from preparing an empty appliance for a long planned shutdown. The GNE27JYMFS storage checklist makes that distinction and links its model documents: GE GNE27JYMFS — Storage & seasonal care | Specs & Parts

I’m unaffiliated with Specs & Parts. Use your own model’s instructions for controls and restart behavior; that example does not establish battery runtime or settings for another fridge.
