I-10 in southern AZ can run 70-80 until it suddenly slows to 10. If you're daydreaming, you just face planted into the rear end of the car in front of you.

Thing is, there's no apparent reason. No accident, no objects in the road, no construction. Traffic just gradually regains speed back up to 70-80 again.

Hair has gotten thin from scratching my head trying to figure that one out. Flying saucers in the road?

The ripple effect of a slowdown/stoppage elsewhere up the road - a well-known issue for decades.

Yep. Was told many years ago that for a convoy to average 45 mph, some rear vehicles would have to hit 70 at times. Was told that the reason they used the convoy signs, Red Ball being most famous, was that some of the soldiers in WW2 couldn't read and they still got drafted.

Yep, have had to fill in parts of one of these in USAF. Ours were several times as long as we were carrying classified materials and had to pass a security checklist as well. Check weapons out of supply and make arrangements for them being off site and such.
