I heard about this idea on NPR. You overhear another student talking about guns. He must be dangerous, so you report him to the Safe School hotline. Armed police show up at his door. How many innocent people will be SWATted in their homes before somebody realizes this isn't a good idea?

Hmmm, so you could call and make up a story to cause trouble for someone you don't like. Apparently it's easy to get away with too, the guy who called in the Kansas swatting call had been involved in 20 other swatting attempts and the police only bothered to go after this guy after someone died.
That is very dangerous and I can see it getting abused. Hopefully the police will investigate/question and not have SWAT visit first.

Ex girl friend didn' like how you broke up with her, she calls it in and says you have guns and made a threat, BAM, guns stolen by cops and you have no recourse except to spend a shit load of money defending your self in a stacked court! There is a CLASSIC Case that comes to mind.... It happened in Lynnwood, Washington many of decades ago.... The Snohomish County had a brand NEW SWAT Team, and this was their FIRST Deployment, after being Commissioned... BackGround: A few years before there was an Armored Car Robbery at a BIG Box Store, after a Three Day Weekend, and a Million Dollars was taken and a Guard was Killed.... Robbers got away Clean, and the Case went COLD, to Frozen, after a couple of years with NO NEW Information.... So, This punk Kid & his Girlfriend got pinched by the Lynnwood Police for Drugs.. Possession and Distribution.... So to get out from under the Arrest, He said he would give the Police, the "Lynnwood Robbers".... He said is Uncle, and Father, from who he was estranged, pulled the JOB... One was a Mechanic, and I can't remember what the other one did but it was a Skilled Job of some kind.. Both were gainfully employed, and had young Children in the Home... Just average Working Joes, raising Families.... So, the Lynwood Cops decided because this information sounded GREAT, they would arrest these guys, but they wanted the NEW County SWAT to Do the Raid, because these guys were ARMED, and had Killed, before.... So they brought in the SWAT Team, Planned the Raid, for 7AM, just before the fellows left for work... They got the Warrant, (No KNOCK) and executed the Raid, Smashed down the Front Door, Threw everyone on the Ground, except the Fathers Wife, who was Holding a BABY in her Arms, and then proceeded to trash the House looking for the Money.... They were Armed with Select-Fire HK MP5s, and one of the Guarding Deputies in the Front Room, Fired his Weapon and hit the Mother in the Head, and she died Instantly, and fell to the Floor... Baby landed on her Body... First we were told, that She had MOVED toward Him.... Then we were told that the Weapon, miss-fired, and was Defective... Then we were told by the Outfit that did the conversion, after they tested the Weapon, that it was NOT Defective, and the conversion was Factory Approved, and done with Factory Parts... Then we were told, that it was a TERRIBLE Accident.... Meanwhile the Husband and Brother got taken to County Jail, and did the really SMART Thing, they SHUT UP, and DEMANDED Counsel... The NEWS got out, and the BEST Criminal LawDog in the Region, took their Case, ProBono, and Went right into Court, to challenge the Warrant, and demand Immediate Release, on Bond... After a Court Hearing, Bond was Granted, so the family could bury the Mother... and then the REAL Truth started to leak out... Both Men were AT WORK, proved by Timecards, Colleagues and Employers Records, at the time of the Robbery.. NO Money was ever found, or Weapons consistent with the Recovered Projectiles from the Robbery. The Punk Kid fessed up, that he Lied, to get out from under the Bust... and the Men sued the City, County, Police Chief, County Sheriff, Swat Team, and everyone who had ANYTHING to do with the Raid Planning and CASE... They won a GIANT Settlement, but Money couldn't undo the Damage Done, from the TOP all the way to the BOTTOM.... The SWAT TEAM was Disbanded, the Weapons were SOLD.... and the local Judge that approved the Warrant, Resigned... I believe the Sheriff, was NOT reElected, when he ran the next time... What made this REAL for me, was MY Friend, and Customer, for my High Accuracy Competition Ammunition, who was the Seattle PD SWAT Training Officer, was called in to supervise the DisBanding, and critic the whole incident, castigated the original Detectives, Police Chief, for NOT checking out the the Story in the First Place... the Prosecutor for failure to disclose Due Diligence to the Warrant Issuing Judge... The Raid Planning, and Training of the SWAT TEAM, from the GET GO... The Issuing, and Use of Automatic Weapons, during Training, and Raid... He believes, as I do, that there is ABSOLUTELY NO Senerio, where Civilian Law Enforcement needs Select-Fire, or Full-Auto Weapons, PERIOD... It just can NOT be justified.... I haven't thought on this Incident for a LONG Time, but it still makes my Blood BOIL, and I weep for the Family, still....
I kind of remember that incident! There was quite a stir down where we were living about all the new SWAT teams building up, and the choice of weps was a serious issue, every one was against the SWAT being armed with select fire arms, and the H-K MP5 was so sexy at the time, every one had to have them. Multi,co ended up with C.A.R. 15 commandos with the burst switch, and there was quite a dust up on that as well. Now days, every LEO agency in this A.O. is armed like this, the new term is "Patrol Carbine" like that makes it better! And people are rightfully concerned that LEO are being militarized, with weaons like this, yup, and some how were all safer! I had the chance to see a OP go live not long ago, dude holed up at a friend's house very close to where we were staying, he had a handgun and had shot his buddy In a drinking football despite, the Sheriffs deputies, City officers from 3 cities, and SWAT all rolled on this, i5 was a massve force, at least 50 cruisers, unmarked, Subs, pickups, and the BearCat all show up, probably over 100 LEO, and had a stand off for 4 hours l. We had two SWAT snipers on the roof of our place, one across the street up in a tree, and one more down the street on the other side of the target house. A senior Sheriffs deputy told us to shelter in place, things were to complex and too many folks around to try and evac every one out, so they took the more likely at risk folk out. My Brother and I armed our selves and waited, 4 fricking hours, for things to calm down. The TANGO tried to run and they sent the dogs after him! Still took another 4 hours to clear every thing out!
Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. I have never seen where a person with power or position would not lie crayfish or deflect blame to evade prosecution or embarrassment. That fact makes it impossible for those that tell the truth to be believed. This is why I do not believe in protective laws for any person group or political sector because all of them will lie. To make one persons life more important than another is against equality. Our leaders scream equality but never defend it, talk about race in inequitable terms and use it as a proxy weapon against their political opponents and in the interest of social engineering of their policy. This recent bomber in Austin should open everyones eyes that a kid with no gun is dangerous he was thankfully not knowledgeable to have executed a better plan. and in this case there were not obvious precursor events or telltale violence to put him on the radar. This is true of many murderers their first act is murder.
