Believe me, there are plenty of hunters around here who'd love to help me out.

I have seen a few wild turkeys interested in my ladies but the dogs escorted them off the property.

A few years ago I bought myself a 22 for mother's day and have shot my own royal palm turkeys for the last two thanksgivings. I simply could not catch them. I did share with the dogs (they got the heads & feet).

It doesn't help with my biggest problem lately -ravens. It took me a long time to convince my husband you can't kill a raven with a 22. A friend killed one with a shotgun and then left it for us but I haven't got any yet. They're pretty smart.

yes you can, they make 22 bird shot for that reason. What range are you shooting at?. 22lr will kill birds easily, just takes a steady hand and eye. (Scope helps)

Is 22 bird shot as hard to come by as regular 22 ammo?
Range? When the see me coming, they fly to a tall tree which is what - 40-100 feet?

40-100 feet is easy range for a scoped. 22lr rifle with a slug. Shot may be hard to find locally, because it's use is rare. Probably have to research it and order it. I have a few I think, but never use it. Thought it is made for birds and snakes.

In the spirit of "set a thief to catch a thief",

    Use a Raven

    upload_2014-3-4_3-15-0.

to take a Raven, .........not a particularly practical suggestion, but it does have a nice punnish circularity to it! ;)

I crushed a raven to prevent anyone from ever relying on it in a case of need. It is the most un reliable pistol I have ever owned.

I've never owned a Raven, PETA would most likely prosecute me for keeping it in a desk draw....and I don't even want to contemplate crushing one!

I have successfully dropped Ravens / Crows with a .22wmr. A .22lr will also do the job, but the wmr is decisive.

I have the new Ruger SR-22 pistols. My wife and I both own one great little guns and shoot the high end hyper velocity stuff real well. My go to survival gun though is the bolt action Marlin 981-T . Gun kid has nothing on me I can take any and all game in Michigan with mine except for the northern Elk herd.

@Kingfish Just got a Ruger 45/22 with Threaded Bull Barrel... Still getting used to it, but so far it is a nice little Plinker....

Nice, that has a little longer barrel and get you a few more feet per second. How well does it shoot hyper rounds like the Stinger or Velocitor? The SR-22 gets about 1000 feet per second with the Velocitor making it equal to a 22 rifle at about 100 yards. By that I mean out of my rifle that Velocitor is still getting a little over 1000 feet per second at 100 yards. The pistol at about 5 feet is making 1000 feet per second. In penetration tests we showed that 40 grain jacketed hollow point was expanding nice at 100 yards with a rifle so we are using that round in the pistols for close quarters. The bullets expand to about 36 caliber . Penetration was excellent going through 8 layers of blue jean cloth and a roast. This link is to survivalistforums where I m also a member. I did this thread a couple years back to show the true nature of the .22 round. There is a ton of great links and test results here for those who think the .22 is a worthless round. For me here in Michigan it is the only gun I would need to survive unless I had to fight. Then I would opt for a 30 caliber weapon or another AR-15 . I hope posting this link isnt against the rules. .22 penetration tests - Survivalist Forum

Nope, Not against the Rules for an Old Monkey like yourself..... I am still getting used to the 45/22... have maybe 300 rounds thru it so far... I take it out every day and do 25-50 rounds. and look at the difference in Groups, as I hone in on the Skillset for it's use. I guess next, is to build a Can for it. Then disassemble it, and just keep the Tube, Spacers, and both ends, in separate locations. around the place, in case the ATF decide to waste $1000US to fly out here, and look around. Last time they were here was 20 years ago. Oh Well....

Well, thanks to kellory, I now have some 22 bird shot!
I haven't tried it yet but my husband, who is not very pro-gun, bought me a shot-gun and some 22 bird shot. He went to a trade show and knew they'd be stopping at the same gun place as last year. Someone had lent us a shot-gun to take care of the ravens and I think he decided we should own one.

It says "Bird shot" on the box. I guess I just need to be extra careful about finding all those bbs if I use it to take out some free ranging roosters. My chicken soup cooks for a long time and lead isn't a key ingredient.

Yes, should be easier with the bird shot. Too easy to miss with a 22.
