As everyone on the receiving end knows after the first hit or miss; follow up shots at 500 would be at best a very iffy thing. Back in the day of the "MBR" aimed fire was the doctrine; any issue "MBR" will hit torso targets at 500.
Go on line buds guns, Gun broker.com, after you find something you like then research it make sure it fits your needs and you can get better prices else where. I have a friend that has an FFL so he orders mine saves me quite a bit. Go with what makes you comfortable and you like to shoot, remember you will be the one depending on the weapons. everyone has their own picks and it works well for them but might not serve you and you just might not like the weapon for what ever reason, which keeps you from preforming as well with it. Your weapons should be like that old worn out pair of shoes you wont throw away because they just fit so good. Your weapon when in your hands should feel like it's part of your body.
Never know what kind of threat you can be facing.... looters, riots, etc. we are talking about a SHTF scenerio.....
Any in person gun stores or shops I should be in the look out for good quality guns and prices? I do prefer getting the firearms in person. Also, any tips on what type of ammo to get? Walmart sells them cheap but the quality sounds bad...

Why not go with the (true, select fire) assault rifle concept that virtually all the world’s military forces agree is the way to go? I would skip the SMG and go with a Mini-14 or Mini-30, but others may prefer the AK or AR platforms. I pick these because they all have proven to be effective and reliable, and they are common as dirt. The more of them that are out there the more ammo, mags, and replacement parts are out there. Just remember, when the SHTF, if you have a Sig 556 (sweet gun) you will be the one guy in 1,000 that does. Remember in “We Were Soldiers” when Sam Elliot said: “Sir, if it comes to where I need an M-16 there’ll be plenty of ‘um layin on the ground.”? If that HK-416 breaks and you don’t have the particular part needed, good luck finding one “layin on the ground”. If you want long range accuracy and low recoil there are only two ways to go. A bolt action (I would go pre 64 mod. 70) in something like 7mm Mag. or a gas operated 7.62 Like the match grade or sniper model M-1A. The M-1A has all the advantages of parts and ammo availability mentioned above. Plus it has proven reliability and can serve as a superb main battle rifle.

Mag capacity has nothing to do with how fast you can reload, just how often you must reload. Every mag has a last round. Murphy’s Law says that last round will be fired at the exact worst moment. When that happens having a system that is quick and easy for YOU to operate is crucial. Go to gun shops and try out loading with empty mags. Try friends rifles, ask folks at the range how they like the reloading characteristics of their rifle, maybe they’ll let you try it out. Once you find a system that you like weigh it against the other pros and cons of the rifle. It’s just one factor. Custom modifications can often be done, like flaring the mag well. Once you settle on and purchase a gun, practice. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Practicing and becoming as proficient as you personally can is the most important thing. It could save your life with a quick 10 round swap out while your enemy is fumbling to get that cumbersome empty 100 round drum out of his gun.
@ Tikka Very true. That's why I'm aiming for non heavy equipment. @ Meplat The Remington 700 is light, quite common and have gotten good feedback. Feasible in addition to the M1A? I'll look into the Mini guns further. I'm guessing for a rifle anything with at least 20 rounds in the mag is good.
You should hook up with some local MOnkey, Gun Nuts, and try out some of the weapons suggested, and see what fits your style, BEFORE you let loose of your cash.....
i would suggest caliber consolidation. if you like the MP5, get a 9mm pistol with high cap mags. ar-15 and a .223 bolt gun. ak and a mini-30. ect, ect, ect...

When people accept the world could easily become a dangerous lawless place; then by their own definition firearms will be required. The MP5A is a bit too sweet to be replaced by a pistol with a hi-cap.
They weigh too much to be assault rifles; their role is supporting or suppressive fire; perimeter defense etc. Any of the military clones are military weapons; so I'd figure they ought to get the mag change job done.
The ar 15 sounds nice and all being quite popular among civilians and military. But cleaning the gun every day for about 20 minutes a day might not be feasible in some situations. I rather go for a rifle with less maintenance, not uncommon and reliable.
20 minutes a day every day? Where did you hear this from? I own 5 AR's and built 4 of those 5. My wife owns an AR as well. So I am fairly handy and familiar with the platform. If you buy a quality AR, you will not have to clean it every day for 20 minutes. I can completely strip an AR (not just take it down but have the lower reciever parts out and bolt taken apart) cleaned and back together in 20 minutes. To do a basic field cleaning I can have it done in less than 5. If you dont like the AR, thats fine. There are a LOT of other options out there for you but dont make stuff up to discredit the rifle, it is nowhere NEAR the maintenance issue you make it out to be.
