I moved into a new house with a fireplace, and was wondering if there is a fire place insert or some such that allows cooking and heating, or if there is a small flat topped wood burning stove that I can use for heat and cooking. I'd run the exhaust pipe up the chimney. Thanks jim
Jim around here they make a plate that basically covers the fireplace insert hole and allows you to put a stove in front of it. I personally don't think they look that great but to each his own. I've heard not seen just heard that there is a plate that goes up the flue area of the chimney that blocks the flue but has a hole so the stove pipe can go up. That way you can run some pipe out and have the stove partially in the old fireplace insert area. Take care Be safe Poacher.
I know they make the flat top stoves that both heat and cook its the kind I have. We got ours at Tractor supply co. for about $150 and it heats a 3 bedroom trailer well.
I need an insert that I could slip into my fireplace if SHTF... My open loft house is too hot upstairs to run it full time.
What you guys need is an air tight. our fire box is 18 inches deep by 14 inches high. on a cold winters night up here in Maine i can load the stove at 6 in the evening and still have a 6 inch bed of coals at 7 in the morning. works great.
When we purchased our home, it came with a free-standing Jotul woodstove like pictured below. The fireplace has plate steel at the front of the firebox, hole drilled for the rear outlet flue. The front legs were cut a little and supports built for the rear legs since the legs are just past the hearth. The modification was done well and have no intention of changing it, the cast iron stove radiates heat well once she is heated up. It'll run you out of the room if not careful. http://www.jotul.us/content/products/ProductArticle____3107.aspx
northwoods Scores!!!!.... you guys wanna talk about small wood burning stoves.. i just bought at a yard sale...a small 16 inches high(on it's legs) by about 14 inches deep wood burning stove. it looks like a tiny barrel stove. it came with a metal milk crate that you can mount the stove on(turn the crate upside down). the chimney it 2 3ft sections... the whole thing could be strapped to a back pack(with out the crate).. it could have been hand made but does not look it... i'll post pics as soon as i can.
