Soup is always a great meal, warm comforting and easy.

    From your current stores
    What could you make today?

    Onion Soup
    1/4 cup dried onion flakes
2 tablespoons sodium-free beef bouillon granules
    1/4 teaspoon onion powder
    1/4 teaspoon parsley flakes
    1/8 teaspoon celery seed
    1/8 teaspoon paprika
    1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

    DIRECTIONS
4 Cups of water boil, add above ingredients
(variation add dried mushroom for more body and flavor)

You can also use this mix in yogurt or sour cream for a dip

Dried fish flakes and rehydrated dried shitake mushrooms make a great broth. Add dried noodles and season to taste.

    Chicken long rice too!

    Canned chicken
    Long rice/bean threads
    Garlic
    Onion
    Green onion
    Ginger
    Star anise

Sautee garlic and onion. Add chicken, ginger and star anise. Star anise is usually not in chicken long rice. My little secret. Add water and bring to a boil and simmer. At the same time, soak the long rice. I season the soup with sea salt and black pepper and some fish sauce. Add the long rice and simmer for another 10-15 minutes. Add green onion. Chili pepper and/or togarashi is optional. So good when it is cold.

Hanzo, how long does dried fish flakes store? I have used a couple year old sea weed and could see no real difference?

Add some Hominy and a little bit of most any thing else that you like and you'll have what we had for dinner yesterday.

My Aunt told me how to make easy soup. I have not tried it but I think the recipe is:

brown up some sausage (drain grease)
cut up whatever veggies are in the fridge and saute in some olive oil
    Must use garlic when sauteing
Combine all that in a pot with V8 and chicken both.
I was told it must be chicken broth.

Noodles can be added. Season to taste

My version of Chicken Tortilla Soup-

Pound or so of cooked chicken chunked up
    Chicken broth
    Hominy drained
Can of Ro-tel tomatoes- not drained
I saute carrots (thin sliced), celery, onions and garlic
    Cilatro- fresh!!

Throw it all in a pot and simmer. I add a dash of cayenne.
Nice and spicy, good soup for when you have the crud or a cold.

I serve it in a bowl with chunks of fresh avocado and some chopped cilantro

More of a stew person, but the easiest would be to grab a bag of homemade beef stew out of the freezer and heat it ;)

Beef, pork, turkey, shrimp, crawfish...along with veggies, spices, broth, boullion, noodles, rice...what would you like? (Sorry, out of venison at the moment  ) Dehydrated, canned, frozen ingredients to chose from...got to have variety :)

Egg drop soup with some cayenne mixed in is a good chilly day snack, too.

Really need to address that lack of venison thingy...

I just made my first beef stew. It wasn't bad

One package of Hormel Beef tip in Gravy
    chicken broth
    veggies & potatoes.

It wasn't thick like stew and I chose not to add a thickener but I could have. It was good and easy.
I threw it all in the crock pot and it simmered for hours.

You have any deer in lets say Honey Island? I hear the place is over-ran with hogs and hunters.

Yup, but the place has been flooded for a while now...The Pearl River has been in flood stage, closing off many access roads and hunting area...and more rain is due tomorrow.

Pretty long time. Longer if you vacuum seal.

Bonito flakes and kombu make an Iron Chef's "broth of vigor" if I recall correctly. I like to add shitake.

Mahalo @Ganado. Reminded me of Iron Chef Michiba's broth of vigor. I had not made my version of it in some time.

But this morning was cold, as the puppy illustrated.

And it was almost lunch time and I was hungry. So my version of the broth of vigor. Konbu, smoked fish shavings from Okinawa that my student brought back for me, and shitake mushrooms.

Just as the noodles were done, I get a message asking for something. Work sometimes, but not always, gets in the way of good eating. I figure I would take the five minutes or so to take care of this before the good folks out east go home. I get back and the noodles sucked up most of the broth. I guess because it was delicious.

I sucked everything else up. Washed everything down with a big cup of hoji cha.

So good. I know wifee likes this broth a lot too. I guess I don't make it as often because the monkeys were not as enthused. Have to try again. Their palates may be different as they are older now.

I don’t have access to an Asian market. Could you point our an online source of fish flakes. And, recommend a brand, type, etc. I’m ignorant of it.
