I’ve had this story idea going through my head after reading Civil War II. Any thoughts and advice would be useful. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /> Basically, in 2018 (or thereabouts) there is a second Great Depression crossing the entire world. Perhaps triggered by a brief skirmish between <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:country-region><st1lace>America</st1lace></st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region><st1lace>China</st1lace></st1:country-region> and <st1:country-region><st1lace>Taiwan</st1lace></st1:country-region>, although the exact cause can be left for later speculation. The shockwaves cross the world and destroy the Mexican government, sending hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing into <st1:country-region><st1lace>America</st1lace></st1:country-region>. The Mexican Cartels, already stretching their tendrils up into the <st1:country-region><st1lace>USA</st1lace></st1:country-region>, are all that remains of the Mexican government. The results in the American south are disastrous, particularly after the government agrees to amnesty hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants. There is a popular upswing in demands for the ‘reconquest’ of <st1:State><st1lace>New Mexico</st1lace></st1:State> and a general collapse of federal authority. The US President, dependent upon the Hispanic vote, has largely turned a blind eye to the growing crisis, even as law and order breaks down and white Americans start to flee the south – or fight. The Democratic Nomination for the 2020 election is Felix Hernandez. Unknown to the rest of the country, Hernandez is actually the leader of one of the cartels and intends to claim even greater powers as President. He already controls a private army and intelligence service, while his people have been uniting the immigrants under his banner. He even has links to Russian and Chinese intelligence services. (The outsiders want a long period of chaos in <st1:country-region><st1lace>America</st1lace></st1:country-region> so they can get on with their own plans.) All of this comes out just after Hernandez achieves a lock on the nomination. A semi-rogue FBI agent uploads evidence collected by an undercover agent to the internet, where it spreads rapidly around the country. Worse, the agent captured images of Hernandez making unpleasant remarks about both blacks and homosexuals, shattering the Democratic Party’s underlying base. The Republican Candidate – standing on a platform of immigration reform and individual rights and freedoms – wins in a landslide. Hernandez, however, has no desire to surrender, particularly when he knows that no one will be merciful. Instead of meekly accepting his defeat, he launches a war intended to split the united states in half… Thoughts? Chris
Hmmm.... maybe more likely a demand for the return of the Mexican cession of 1848 and the reversal of the Gadsden purchase initially which when declined would lead to an attempted populust upraising for a greater Hispania/mexico... would have to be handled carefully or might have racial over tones.... but definately doable...
I have a bunch of hispanic friends whose familirs have been in the US both for generations and recently and none of them I know want to have part of the US made back into mexico. They are all proud to be americans now. Not saying everyone who is an imigrant is its just that it would be better if the story includes some people like that. Also there are a lot of non mexican hispanics in this country too.
