Stress as a threat to survival

Looks like the crash in India that killed a couple hundred people was due to the pilot turning off the fuel switches just as the wheels left the ground and then turning them back on when it was too late for the engines to start to produce power. That is at least the 3 rd I know of a pilot crashing the airplane. One was a German pilot and the second Egypt air. That is not counting hijackers or deranged individuals who have caused dozens of more.

Off-duty pilot accused of trying to shut off engines midflight isn’t first time something like this has happened

If this happens to one of the most rigidly monitored and trained groups in the world, what will happen in a SHTF situation? Is the person on guard going to shoot you when you come to replace him? Are they going to panic and shoot at a non threat and get you all killed or in serious trouble? Are they going to attack you in order to get your resources under the stress of being afraid of not having enough of their own? Stress can make you do things that are in the words of Spock, not logical. Some individuals have very poor reactions to stress and do not handle it well. If it leads up to a desire to end themselves, you may well join them as an unwilling fellow traveler on the road to death.

While we can spot terrorist, it is difficult to spot those in non SHTF times who go Postal and kill those around them in a random way. Las Vegas shooter, 58 killed, is one example of the later. People knew he was dangerous but didn't think he would do something.

How do you react to the irrational reactions to stress by others? If the SHTF does hit the fan, I know of several individuals who are very high up in the lists of things I fear. They are even in the good times ruled by their emotions and can in their own minds while under stress, justify any action that they may take. One such individual I know also has a bipolar disease and is truly both a close neighbor and very likely to be very dangerous when both off his medications and under a lot of stress. How do you plan on dealing with such individuals? How do you keep from getting sucked into their world?

Final and most important question is how do you remain in control and manage your own reactions when under severe stress. It is even more difficult as you may have to react at once and in a non standard way in order to survive and protect both yourself and the group

it was very revealing in volunteer fire/ems who got shell shock and who didn't. some times you just cant tell how folks will react to body recovery's, bad car wrecks until they do one. good post to consider, your limits and those around you.

Stress has different effects on different people. Some eat it like a bowl of grits and use it to their advantage, while others fall to pieces. It sounds callous, but I tend to put distance between myself and those that fall apart, including an ex-wife and several good friends over the years. I've always been one to run towards the gunfire although I'm not sure why, just wired that way, and I tend to expect the same of others I associate with.

    tmi,,, i know.

when i dropped out of 10th grade i had been to 11 schools in 5 states. mom married 7x. when i was 10 i was a only child, by 13 i had 7 step brother/sisters in 3 states. i left home at 16 to work at a gas station in downtown long beach. after step father #4&5 left he married a 15yo and had 5 kids. he hung himself on xmass. my life from 9 to 18 is simply not worth remembering.,,,, but if you want to breed someone to leap out of bed at 2am and fight fire, cut body's out of cars, well. adversity and hardship can destroy you, or it can give you strength. very few would thrive on the solitude i seek and live with,, but i am the grey man you hope is there when shit goes bad.
don't pity me. i am proud of who and what i am.

    Good point Mr Duane ,,,
I've known a few folks that have just flipped out ,, couldn't handle the situation at hand ,, they just go hysterical. One being my daughter ,, there's been times when I guess things just get to be to much,, and the only thing I could do was to just scream louder than she was ,, to shut up ,, and calm down,, asses the situation,,, it worked ,,, but for someone that has to take meds to control those moods ,,,, and loses access to those meds ,,,, is something I haven't considered.
    Interesting question ,,,,
