When the snow is deep and the air is cold, sometimes it's worth looking at what summer will bring again. These sunflower were, at summers end, tall enough that DW had to stand on a step ladder to reach the sead-heads. As seen here, the stems are nearly 8 ft tall... We use raised beds, and now I grow potatoes in containers. That is - once the snow melts and it warms up..... Enjoy
Everywhere is on the tip of the globe, but fewer tips are on the top (or bottom) where the summer hours are longer than elsewhere closer to the equator. (Another no sh!t Sherlock observation for ghrit's collection.) Nice sunflowers DK. Are they heavy feeders?
These flowers are from a rare dry summer with little overcast. This last summer, frost didn't stop until into June. I now plant in containers - I can spill the soil out on a tarp for the sun to warm (the barrels are already black) before planting. I pulled out my last summer potatoes and found hard ice 8 inches down. People wonder why I believe AGW is just so much BS. I'm trying to get my DW to let me try no-dig in addition to containers this year for potatoes. If nothing else, it will reduce the amount of grass we need to cut....
