Read a good article on different cities and different ways things could collapse. While he lists 5, in my mind I could add more. Live north of Boston and see it in case of collapse. Densely populated area that requires all of its food, water, fuel, power, and sewage to be dependent on external sources. No heat in January would do them in alone. Need fuel oil, gas, or electric in order to heat their homes. They produce none of those. All water is pumped in and treated with reservoirs for the source. All their sewage is pumped out to a treatment plant. No electric, no sewer or water and for many no heat or elevators for the high rise buildings. If you do prep, there are going to be a million people with a long history of the state taking care of them, who will want to "share" your resources as they both deserve them and you are hoarding goods that belong to the common good, ZeroHedge published this article, but it was written by Milan Adams in the blog preppgroup.home.blog. It is well written and well thought out. Well worth reading. I think the videos are a little to aimed at the shock prepper. Raise fear and then sell something, but the article itself is good. Never understood the need to think you have to frighten people over some threat to make them take an action. But then again I may just be naive, The 5 Places in America You DON’T Want to Be When Society Collapses… – Preppgroup I would very much like to hear what others feel about this type of article. Why are we prepping? What is likely to happen if the socialists take over and throw sand in the gears of a motor that is both old, nearly worn out, and overloaded. As an example the major source of water is the 1939 Quabbin Reservoir and they are still replacing the lead pipes. Some of the iron pipes in use date back to the late 1800's. Here is a history of the Boston water system from 1630 to 1978 and while it has nothing to do with prepping, I found very interesting. Goes back to areas of the present Boston being settled in the first place as they had good drinking water. If the SHTF we would again be back to that as it is unlikely that we could pump and maintain a supply from 40 miles away. In most of our history, the two greatest causes of death have been bad water and fire. The earthquake in Haiti caused over 800,000 to get ill with cholera and about 10,000 to die. That happened even with outside aid and modern treatments available. https://www.bwsc.org/sites/default/files/2023-02/History of the Water and Sewer Works of the City of Boston 1630-1978.pdf
You do not want to be in any high population density city during a fast collapse. How would Chicago be any better than the five cities in the article? What about St. Louis/East St. Louis that has been the murder capital of this nation for quite some time. What about Philadelphia/Camden New Jersey? Two cities separated by a river that also has a uber high murder rate! Watch numerous videos of Philly’s Kensington Avenue and all the drugged out homeless addicts. The article has some good points, but completely ignoring other large cities for their well known violent crime rates and their own economic problems from collapsed industries. Were this article falls short is not highlighting all of the currently most dangerous places to be when society collapses nation wide that will only become living horror movies.
extremely eazy to determine where you don't want to be >>> just reverse the order of the states where civilization and statehood was established last = just about the only exception is Hawaii - it came in last because of the location - still a hinderance to others joining the Union ...... parts of the SW US would have to be evacuated if the grid went down - cities & population growth post-WW2 due to modern technology - without pumped in water & AC most would return to the desert = some totally uninhabitable ......
No place is perfect, but some might be better than others. Middle of "NOWHERE, USA, might sound nice with lack of crime, good well-watered land, good people and far from the madding hordes, but you will soon face shortages of resources and services. However, it beats "BIG CITY, USA" by a long shot, with its population density, crime, disease, lack of resources, and loss of services. As for me, there are entirely too many people living in this county to suit me. I like to say that I live in the country, but it's more like the suburbs with lots of farmland around it. Big town/small city of 50,000 is only 10 minutes away, and there are several large cities (1 million+) only 1-2 hours away, easily driving if you got 1/2 tank of gas. I suppose, with enough organization, we could set-up some roadblocks or destroy a few bridges and slow them down, maybe even stop them. But that's a big maybe! Best bet is to go with "Plan Vlad" and surround my AO with enough dead bodies and body parts to discourage folks. I hate the thought of that cause I'm gonna have to buy lots more ammo (and other things) and Vick's Vapor Rub (cause the smell is gonna be terrible).
Remember too that you need stuff for barter, things or food you don't particularly care about but are legitimate items of interest people will be looking for, booze may not be your thing but there are those that will give anything for it. knowing how to make alcohol alone for fuel or medical emergencies or making so many other things if you learn how long before things fall apart.
First, unless it's a EMP strike via mother nature or our adversaries then I believe collapse will come relatively slow, probably not months but maybe a couple of weeks, if we're lucky then the final few days will be at tsunami speed. My guess is the debt will sooner or later hit us, probably brought about by some natural or manmade disaster and then the stores only keeping about 3 days of food on hand...maybe two weeks or less and if electric gets cuts in the beginning, then definitely less than 2 weeks. Big cities will become death traps, especially when people get hungry and the police no longer can or will show up which allows the gangs and criminal element to roam the streets unopposed. Actually this is a pretty good article! @duane Thanks!
And there's much to assume if we believe there will be a lot of people. When the natural disasters strike, the ones we are expecting won't leave many people to fight and complain. Leading up to this point we can only speculate about how much society crumbles into chaos. We can learn from other events from countries with economic collapse. The only questions remaining are along the lines of which will come first, the Bill Gates final solution or the coming cyclical catastrophe?
