So today I was checking out a big ammo can I just bought, and I started thinking about caches. Do any of you have, for example, buried, underground caches of guns 'n' ammo, along with maybe first aide, a flashlight and a little food and water? (With the ammo kept in ammo cans, that is.) I can see taking a good look at the area you live, and mapping out some possible getaway routes, whether en route to a bugout location or just for when you're running for dear life, and along the way you might install a few such caches. Batteries and comms gear would also be good to store in those. Hannah Montana T-shirts would be less important but might be lighten the mood.
Thanks, that's interesting. I should have guessed there was already a product on the market for just what I was describing. As far as morale boosters, Twinkies would not be my first choice. There are some, uh, girls I, um, stumbled upon on Instagram with mammaries the size of prize winning pumpkins. If I had a girl like that at each location, eager to give me her, well, personal assets, in exchange for food, shelter and a foot massage, that would boost my morale plenty.
There are plenty of products on the market, you could go the economical route and make your own with pvc pipe, end caps and screw on caps. Whatever you use, always have at least two layers of protection, three layers even better if feasible. These layers would be the main burial vault that has been tested in your bath tube or out door pool/tub/55 gallon drum to test for true water tight protection. Some of these burial vaults sold are worthless. The second layer for valuable metals, coins, or cash can be placed in a smaller pelican style waterproof case also tested by you for water tightness. The third layer would be the vacuum sealed Food Saver bags that can be purchased at Wally World along with the Food Saver vacuum machine.
No, I do not have any caches, but I do see the value of them in certain instances. For example, if you did have a bugout location then having a cache near the location would make perfect sense or if you lived in a city and the plan was to leave the city then again a cache would make sense, especially at some rally point. I live in the country, have no plan to bugout unless I am forced out by wildfire. I live with my cache and if someone wants it then they can try and take it. For me, I simply don't see the sense in one. Now, that might change at any time but currently politics are getting better not worse so... EDIT: I did just hear that the state next to mine (Washington State, I'm in Idaho) just passed a law that non-citizens can now become law enforcement officers...which I find extremely scary, real 1984 stuff...just when I thought things were improving. Thankfully, I don't have to go there very often.
the "O" ring used on ammo boxes aren't good enough for burial - unless you are caching in the arid arid desert you'll have a box full of groundwater .... DIY a PVC pipe cache tube - it'll even be detector proof depending on the contents ...... because of all season access - I cache vertically - use a flex cap that is surface level under a walkway paver - access within minutes - not alot that you can't figure out how to cache in a 6" tube ......
There are certainly instances where a cache would be very beneficial, but I am of the mind to believe if we really need to bury our guns and ammo, it is long past time to use them.
