The fun thing about fully automatic IS getting the rounds on target. I will admit I've no real experience with anything newer than the M60-not a fav. However, with the MG34/42's in particular as well as the Browning1919A4/Mk21Mod0 I assure you there is no problem getting rounds on target in a timely and accurate manner. Like any other firearm it just takes a bit of practice. If you are ever presented with the opportunity to get behind one of these fine weapons I urge you to do so and I think you'll quickly see what I mean.

@ghrit if you happen to still have an old Gladius Hispaniensis laying amongst your old gear I've always wanted one..

Extremely interesting topic... It's discussions like these that help one to chew down to the bone.

@enloopious said, "So if all of the people making the laws are the ones breaking them then what does that tell us? It tells us that we are headed for a police state where the criminals are in charge."
I like this as it brings to light the 'Devil Alternative' for there is no correct answer here nor correct course of action, nothing that supplies a perfect solution - it's damn if we do, but more damned if we don't.

For with an wide open 2nd, evil individuals, groups, and countries would undoubtedly have easier access to military grade weapons, and don't kid yourself for this would indeed be a problem - a big problem; however, a much bigger and much bloodier problem is a government that is becoming more and more totalitarian every year and even now rules instead of governs. So, two evils... a mass murderer that kills 100 or a mass murderer that kills 10,000 or more...call it the lesser of two evils or what you will but doesn't seem like much of a choice to me.

So, I think it boils down to... not a question of if we want a completely open 2nd Amendment but more of a statement of we must have a completely open 2nd Amendment. Yeah, I don't think we have a choice...

We are a civilized nation therefore the violence is supposed to have the effect that it does. I think we are supposed be bleeding hearts. The definition of civilized is:

Having a highly developed society and culture. 2. Showing evidence of moral and intellectual advancement; humane, ethical, and reasonable: terrorist acts that shocked the civilized world. 3. Marked by refinement in taste and manners; cultured.

We strive to be a civilized nation and civilized nations are not supposed to have school shooting and such. I wondered can America have the freedoms it does and be a civilized nation? We have freedom of speech yet if you say some words, you will be publicly shamed and vilified. We have the right to bear arms but in the hands of the unstable, we have massacres.

Ah, the grand old M1919, such a slick and accurate weapon, for a machine gun, it just dosn't get any better. What's not to love,it can run both flavors of .30 cal ammo, and is about as reliable as they come!
Bandit99, I sort of agree with you, the alleged fear of the unknown, but historically I can point out some pretty shockingly accurate details. As you know, there are many countries where lawlessness prevales, even a failed state or three, all those countries have a burgeoing arms market where you can buy pretty much any man ports weapon you desire! In pretty much all those areas, those weapons are used more for security then most any thing else, crimes involving them don't happen regularly, it's when Waring factions face off that these get used, the average person makes due with what he can find, or whay he has stashed. Look at south America, there are many Full auto small arms owned by the common man, and again, most are used for personal security. I once spent some time shopping an arms market, and the prices and availability were pretty darn good, and quality modern small arms were in good supply, I had to talk my self out of a Super sweet AUG with all the goodies, about $400 U.S. which was the higher end of things, a good serviceable AKM or AK-74 could be had for just over $100 U.S. putting them within reach of many of the population in that area! What was eye opening was the lack of crime, folks feared each other because every one had an AK on a string around his neck, and a loaded mag in the weapon! Nobody screwed around in that city! We also counted about 4 dozen kids so armed, so the age based thinking dosnt hold water. A 12 year old with the basics is a valid and deadly threat!

I have a plan fer dat! If and when we get the boat, I'm seriously taking a trip off shore and stocking up. Last time I saw a Super deal on an M-2A2 fixed timing for about $1200 U.S. and all the belts you could carry. Also had several DSH-ks for about half that! RPG's up the wazoo, and pretty much every thing else. Even spotted a couple of really nicely preserved Mausers! Would make a formidable arsenal should one be willing to risk ever entering U.S. waters with that kind of firepower. Hell, the boats big enough, a Bofors 40 mike mike would be the cats meow! Those dams things run forever, barrels shot out and rusted all to hell, as long as a round sort of chambers and the action cycles, it will fire! One can wish!

Motomom34, I agree, we are suposed to be civilised and highly advanced (utopian socalisist) that we are so one has to wonder how all these things could happen right? That's my feelings, how ever, once you take the red pill, you see the dark side, the evil planning to destroy the very thing that makes this once great nation what it once was and transform it into the wet dream of the liberals amoung us, and we continue to feed that fire through ignorance and complacency, or downright denial! What does the future look like here? Not good says me, I see one of two outcomes, one is bloody and merciless, and the outcome is uncertain, and the other is complete surrender and acquiescence to the socialist powers that be, out benevolent .gov! Where the ultra elite weild absolute power, and you and I become an subservient workers to every need! Picture the darkest days of the old Soviet union, stir in a spoon full of Maoest China, and add a pinch of Iran in the 70s! That's about what we will have, paranoia and all, think Stalin on one of his bad days, that's what I see our future being!

It is always going to get darker before it gets lighter. The problem is that the farther you travel down that road the farther it is to come back. There are no evil individuals because for there to be, you would have to define evil, and after hours/days/years of research you come to the conclusion that evil=control. That being said, controlling weapon distribution is evil and there can be no good result from it. It appears good on the surface and that is why there is support but if you follow the other path where all weapons are legal to its conclusion you will see a much better result. People will suffer in the short term but gain MUCH respect for weapons, danger, and most importantly, other people. This is key to people respecting each other. If they don't have any real world consequences for their actions they will never learn. We must have consequences for our actions and that can not be legislated. You can not legislate morality.

It all comes down to the person who owns the gun. My kids tell me about how other kids act in school.A lot of low class thinking folks out there. Our current gangster/thug infested society isn't helping out. If society and the media came out against this lowering of standards of thinking acting and living? Otherwise, it just gets worse. People I work with just say its "a style thing" Like Being a hippy was. Many years back an ex-felon told me that the country wasn't ready for gangs and that they would become a big problem. He was right. Commons sense and decency are in short supply out there.

If I ever get something full auto it's going to be 22lr to 9mm, preferably on the smaller end or something crew serviced.
I can't hit a damn thing with an m16a2 on burst, so imo an auto centerfire full auto rifle is a waste of ammo.

Even in a civilized society there is a necessity for those with a penchant for violence. Or the society will cease to exist.
If everyone that had arm and beat them into plowshares to till their own land, sooner, rather than later they will be tilling the land for someone else because their ancestors kept their arms and the knowledge on their use.

I actually think that the US has a pretty tame society, sure there is violence. But we don't have any besieged cities. No tribal wars. No civil wars. None of our people are dropping barrel bombs on the Jewish Synagogues in NYC. Snipers aren't on the roof tops picking off worshipers at Mosques in Dearborn. More people are killing themselves by their own hand than the all the criminal homicides .. by a factor of 2 (CDC 2015 FastStats ). And 'Assault Weapons' doesn't even budge the percentage.

Just imagine how much violence we will have if all the law abiding civilians are disarmed. It'll be a blood bath. Old grudges, racial and religious hatred, gang and territory/turf wars. Yep, only the criminals will have firepower. Regular citizens will be caught in the cross fire. Those that have the gun will have the power over all they survey. So, Gangs, Rebels, Outlaws, Police, Military and large corporations will tell their chattel what they need to do for them.

So long as we have guns available just about everywhere in the states, it kind of keeps those with that may want to assert their dominion over others at bay.

So yeah, prep some supplies for the great grand kids. It's amazing what you can fit into the false bottom of a handmade hope chest when you lay it correctly.

Discussions like this always get bogged down in the details, but the correct approach is to consider concepts. No, the founders probably never envisioned machine guns, but they were ensuring government could never become tyrannical. That of course requires that the people always have the power to force government to back down. So it doesn't matter which weapons who is allowed to have. The thing that matters, is that no matter how big the government gets, it's never THAT big. What more answer do you need?
"Civilized" - it's another temptation to assume that history is over, that we are not the same people who made every mistake ever. Think hard about that. "It can't happen here" is in the hearts of every millenial.
