Yes you can...at least most varieties. We have walnut trees and take about 30 lbs a year...I smoke most them with various brines.

 

I take it someone has an allergy to walnuts?

 

I'll be on the ground do'in the funky chicken if I even get a strong smell of walnuts.

 

Ahhhh...now I understand...

 

Couple years back, we pulled over a half ton of pecans. This year, they died without making a single nut...sad times.

 

Mast crops are cyclic. I don't know if it's true for all nut trees, but with Acorns, it's a 7year cycle. Smaller or even no crop every season, but every 7 years there should be a massive mast crop.

 

We could get a lot more than we do from the walnuts, but for the fact that we are lazy... combined with the habit of leaving a lot of everything for the animals. Between no hunting on our land and making sure there is lots of forage, we try to make sure the game will be there if we ever need it.

 

It was a no crop year for acorns. None. Not sure if it was cyclical or do to the wacky Spring weather.

 

Friends think I am nuts for feeding deer and hogs and not hunting any more than I do. But, when the SHTF I plan to harvest all I can smoke, dry and can before the unprepared "I can fish and hunt and feed my family" types eradicate all wildlife in the area. I figured out to feed a family of four one would have to kill an average East Texas deer every eight days.

 

I am currently in what they call West Texas....though it is more S. Central IMO (San Angelo area)...and was pretty surprised at the little deer compared to what we have in Oregon.

 

Not really that much meat when you debone it. We get some heavy bucks, but not many. White Tails are just not that big here. But we get some large hogs. They are a pain in the butt for gardening but I just see pork chops and roast.

The main thing I've tried to preach to my family is to recognize the signs of a big problem getting ready to happen. Fuel up the vehicle and get to the property. Make certain to take the backroads and stop for nobody. Now, in most situations you have some time if you say to yourself like in the movie Casino, "Why take the chance." What the worst that can happen if you over-react?

 

Potentially kill someone needlessly?

 

Go to jail for doing it?

 

IMO that is why practice, practice, practice is a key thing. Both mentally and physically do the best you can to prepare then maybe you will avoid an over-reaction.Over-reaction can result in a irrevocable mistake. Some mistakes have a snowball effect.

 

And anytime you make mistakes, you waste time, material, and money.

Here's are a few questions, that you really need to think about. "How do you KNOW when the Rule Of Law, has failed?" "When does The End Of The World As I Know It." Start? At what point does it change from murder at long range, to defending your Area Of Operations?
Do looters carry signs? "LOOTER, KILL ME." or was that group trying to bargin with you? Perhaps an attempt at barter? Someone recently said "I'll just use them for target practice." (Really? How do you even know they might be hostile? )
Now it's "what's the worst that could happen if I overreact?" (Someone dies? Maybe even you?. Or perhaps you start a feud/war without need, that consumes both groups. The word " vendetta" comes to mind. Over what? Someone with guns approached your location. Why?, you have no idea, but decided to "use them for target practice".
Turn it around. Maybe it is you approaching them, for an offer of barter or mutual support. THEY overreact. Now what?
Approaching someone new will need to be like porcupines mating (done carefully and with effort onn both sides.) By radio would be most likely, first.
The point of this is, this is careless, and people can die.
" What's the worst that could happen if I over react? (You might confuse people with targets. you might get one or more of your loved ones dead. You might set something in motion, you can't stop.)

Hmmm...when tens-of-thousands are dying and millions at risk with martial law in effect or soon close behind, I'm not going to split hairs and worry about being PC. It's bad enough I'm only charging $25k for spaces in my shelter...and if the time every comes we need it and I charge a fair price at that point (millions in gold), the GOVERNMENT would come back later and attempt to prosecute me for price gouging...when any Vegas bookie would take my side. Most people would say the chances of anything bad happening is less than 1%. So that's a minimum of a 100:1 payout (that's just for even money). So that $25k would fairly be $2,500,000 but courts don't use sound mathematical logic.

For example, it currently pays to commit crimes or steal. If you steal from someone, what are the chance of getting caught? Pretty small, but judges will only make the terrorists (criminals) pay you even money back when in all reality they should have to pay at least 25:1.

 

You took my quote out of text-- "Use them for target practice". That was used in the context of someone telling me how I should share my location because of all so bad people out there. "Bad" / terrorists / thieves... in case of Martial law or any any definition of the word "bad" / evil, that implies thieves with weapons under the context we were speaking....but if this forum is about misquoting people to make "OBVIOUS ARGUMENTS" & PC statements...don't we get enough of that at work?
