WEBER Associated Press ALBA — Family opposition to a teenage girl's romance is suspected of leading to the slayings of the girl's mother and brothers and the wounding of her father, investigators said Sunday. The scenario was spelled out in a statement issued by the Rains County Sheriff's Department in the fiery pre-dawn attack on the rural East Texas home of Terry and Penny Caffey on Saturday. The scene of the attack was about 20 acres of pine-canopied, remote woodland on a narrow gravel road with just two other homes between the small East Texas towns of Emory and Alba. That is about 60 miles northeast of Dallas in Rains County, the second-smallest county in Texas. Four suspects, including the Caffeys' juvenile daughter, remained in custody Sunday. Charlie James Wilkinson, 19; Charles Allen Wade, 20; and Bobbi Gale Johnson, 18, all of Emory, are all charged with three counts each of capital murder, according to the sheriff's department statement. All remain in Rains County Jail with bonds set at $500,000 each. The 16-year-old daughter is confined in neighboring Hunt County's juvenile detention center in Greenville. Sheriff's deputies withheld her name because of her age. ``Early on in the investigation, it was revealed that the juvenile and one of the suspects were dating and made to break up,'' according to the statement. Mrs. Caffey, 37, was killed along with her two sons, Tyler Caffey, 8, and Mathew Caffey 13, according to the statement. All had been shot and stabbed multiple times. Terry Caffey was in critical but stable condition Sunday in East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, where he was being treated for a gunshot wound to the head. Despite his wound, the father was able to crawl about 300 yards to a neighbor's house to seek help. Meanwhile, flames consumed the Caffeys' home with the bodies of Mrs. Caffey and their two sons inside. Investigators later found their daughter hiding at the home of one of the suspects, according to the statement. It was not clear from the account which of the suspects she was dating.
Re: TX: Teens jailed after fatal shootings, fiery pre-dawn a What a mess. Alba is not that far from Tyler, maybe 40 or 50 miles. The daughter must have gone off the deep end, maybe drugs played a part, but she could not have been in her right mind to participate in the murder of her family.
