Given the turmoil that has been going on in this region lately, why weren't the Marines there in the first place?? (See Clyde's earlier post)

Were there Marines at the embassy in Egypt?? Anyone know?

I think (given tulianr's post) that unless embassy guards' ROE "evolve" with the situation, this is going to happen again.

Seriously? Tell me how your above reaction is any different from this one. http://egypt.usembassy.gov/pr091112.html I find them both despicable.
I care as much about islam as muslims do about Christianity. Respect is earned, and mutual.

I see where WTI oil is currently 96.98/bbl. Where will it be next week?

After all, before the Muslim Brotherhood shot their way into power in Libya, they produced some 6% of what oil was used world-wide.

The U.S. Energy Department's Energy Information Administration, in its monthly report, said that production in December 2011 had rebounded to 800 million bpd. The report said that by April 2012, Libya oil production was at 1.4 million bpd.

This post brings up another subject I posted on some time ago. This Obama Administration being chummy with the Muslim Brotherhood is not good. Do a little research on the history and actions of the Muslim Brotherhood. They support and are terrorists of the first ilk. .... jmho

Interesting take from the rest of "The World Community"

In Russia - The first commentaries on Twitter were bitingly sarcastic — “The democratized residents of Libya thanked the staff of the American Embassy for its support,” read one, and another read, “This is what you call exporting democracy, it seems. America gives Libya a revolution, and Libyans, in return, kill the ambassador.”

Yevgeny Y. Satanovsky, president of the Institute of the Middle East in Moscow, said American leaders should not expect “one word of sympathy” from their Russian counterparts.
“It is a tragedy to the family of the poor ambassador, but his blood is on the hands of Hillary Clinton personally and Barack Obama personally,” Mr. Satanovsky said. He said Russian warnings against intervention in the Middle East came from the bitter experience of the Soviets in Afghanistan.

    (Money quote)
“You are the Soviet Union now, guys, and you pay the price,” he said. “You are trying to distribute democracy the way we tried to distribute socialism. You do it the Western way. They hate both.” He said dictators were preferable to the constellation of armed forces that emerge when they are unseated.

“They lynched Qaddafi — do you really think they will be thankful to you?” he said. “They use stupid white people from a big rich and stupid country which they really hate.”

    Ouch!

Russia’s case against American involvement in the Middle East dates from the post-Sept. 11 campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. But it has been at the forefront of Russian discourse for at least a year, since Mr. Putin broke out of his role as prime minister and delivered a passionate criticism of the NATO bombing campaign in Libya, leaving the clear impression that he — unlike his predecessor — would have used Russia’s power in the United Nations to stop it.

Ouch again. Now Syria is heating up....

It's not one world and not everyone sees the US as 'the good guys'.

And the attack in Libya also brings up the notion of "Fifth Generation Warfare. THe Marine Corps Gazette has a few things to say about that.

LtCol Stanton S. Coerr’s article, “Fifth-Generation Warfare: Warfare Versus the Nonstate” (MCG, Jan09), introduces several ideas that describe current and future conflicts. The author states, “[O]ur next conflict could well be small, morally confusing, and idea centered, combining the worst ends of Saigon, Mogadishu, 11 September 2001, and Baghdad.” LtCol Coerr’s first point is that America’s fifth-generation warfare (5GW) irregular opponent may not have a center of gravity (COG).

I think this sums it up. Though I find half the expressions that are done to the Bible, the flag and America I will not deny freedom of expression. These Muslims for as much as they call Americans heathens, evil etc.... they do not understand our culture. We catch h3ll for not being PC and being sympathetic to their culture but that is who we are. In their world it is their way or no way.

Bingo! Those were my thoughts also. I am aware of the news, more then half the country and I NEVER saw anything about this movie until yesterday. If this was so controversial and if it was being marketed why hadn't I heard of it? Did anyone hear of this film before yesterday? Did they only market it in the Middle East?

In one of those "Can it get any stranger?" moments

"Wired" via Fox News is reporting -

One of the American diplomats killed Tuesday in a bloody attack on a Libyan Consulate told pals in an online gaming forum hours earlier that he'd seen suspicious people taking pictures outside his compound and wondered if he and his team might "die tonight."

Sean Smith, a foreign service information management officer assigned to the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, was well known in the online gaming forum EVE Online, where he went by the name "vilerat," and was seen as a leader by his fellow gamers. Smith was killed along with three others, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens, when the consulate was attacked by an angry mob.

But hours before the bloody assault, Smith sent a message to Alex Gianturco, the director of "Goonswarm," Smith's online gaming team or "guild."
“Assuming we don’t die tonight,” the message, which was first reported by Wired, read. “We saw one of our ‘police’ that guard the compound taking pictures.”

Within hours of posting that message, Smith, a husband and father of two, was dead. Gianturco, who could not be reached for further comment, got the word out to fellow gamers, according to Wired.

Yeah, a movie no one had basically heard about until the Islamic nations made a fuss about it. Also, it is a movie made by some unknown guy who may or may not be Jewish, who has disappeared. This whole thing stinks! Smoke & mirrors.... the real tragedy is people lost their lives. My heart got heavy after reading DKR's post above. Just tragic.

US Muslim Leaders Condemn Violent Protests in Libya, Egypt

    September 12, 2012
WASHINGTON — American Muslim leaders are condemning the killing of U.S. diplomatic personnel in Libya and the assault on the U.S. embassy in Egypt as well as the anti-Islamic video that apparently sparked the attacks. They say violence is not the answer to criticism of their religion.

The violence in Benghazi and Cairo has shocked Americans -- including American Muslims.

A group of U.S. Muslim leaders joined other clergy at the National Press Club here in Washington on Wednesday to condemn the killing of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

"We mourn the loss of a champion of freedom," said Imam Mohamed Majid, President of the Indiana-based Islamic Society of North America.
    ......
"It's okay to be angry; it's okay to be upset because we love the Prophet. But the way we respond is in the prophetic way, in his way, not the dictated way from other people who tell us we're going to incite you to commit violence so you can distort the image of your prophet furthermore," he said.
    ......
Haris Tarin, Washington Director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, an advocacy group that promotes the integration of Muslims in American society, says there is a small, but committed segment of U.S. society that is trying to defame Islam.

"They're not in the business of trying to promote understanding, better relations, democracy. They're in the business of demonizing, of hate mongering and trying to marginalize American Muslim communities and incite U.S.-majority Muslim country relations," Tarin said.

Tarin says the protesters in Libya and Egypt were incited by the film to riot, but that they are wrong if they think that America is anti-Muslim. "And the last message that I want to send to our brethren in the Muslim world is that Muslims in America are a vibrant community who enjoy religious freedom to its utmost," he said.

These religious leaders say this is not a conflict between Islam and America, but between fringe groups who want to incite one.

(CNN) -- Global reaction to the attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions in Egypt and in Libya, where U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed amid Muslim outrage over a film mocking the Prophet Mohammed:
    ........
Mohammed al-Megaryef, president of Libya's ruling General National Congress:
"We apologize to the U.S., to the American people and to the government and also to the rest of the world for what happened yesterday. And at the same time, we expect the world to cooperate with us to confront to what is meant out of this kind of act of cowardice."

    Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Kandil:
"What happened at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo is regrettable and rejected by all Egyptian people and cannot be justified, especially if we consider that the people who produced this low film have no relation to the U.S. government. We ask the American government to take a firm position toward this filmmakers within the framework of international charters that criminalize acts that stir strife on the basis of race, color or religion."

Muslim leaders in Maryland condemn attacks

By Matthew Hay Brown, The Baltimore Sun
    6:41 p.m. EDT, September 12, 2012
Events such as the attacks on the U.S. diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt that left four Americans dead make Hasan Jalisi's work more difficult.
As president of the Maryland Muslim Council, the Baltimore County surgeon works with Christian, Jewish and other leaders to promote interfaith understanding.

But he says the attacks Tuesday on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and the embassy in Cairo — apparently in response to the online trailer for a low-budget film ridiculing the Prophet Muhammad — put the focus, once again, on the wrong people.

"On one side, when there are people who are insulting Islam or the prophet, it makes it easy for the small minority ... who on our side say 'Everyone hates Muslims,' " Jalisi said Wednesday. "They use this as an excuse of saying that America is against Muslims and the whole world is against us.

"And then on the flip side, when you react to it — for example, if we had reacted in Maryland against the burning of the Quran in Florida — it helps those people who are doing it. … If you react to these people who are just looking for airtime, you just make them more important than they really need to be."
Muslim leaders in Maryland joined their counterparts nationwide Wednesday in condemning the attacks. Killed in Benghazi were Ambassador John Christopher Stevens, who owned a home in Chevy Chase, and three others.

"We condemn the disgraceful killings of the American diplomats in Libya in the strongest terms possible," Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said Wednesday in Washington. "We also condemn the attack on our nation's diplomatic facilities in Libya and Egypt. The actions of the attackers are totally inexcusable and un-Islamic."

"As American Muslims, there is no question that we categorically condemn any acts of violence and hate speech against anyone," said Maqbool Patel, president of the Islamic Society of Baltimore. "It is against the fundamental teaching of the religion of Islam."

Jalisi says Islamic tradition specifically opposes attacks on ambassadors. Although emissaries Muhammad sent to foreign nations were beheaded, he said, he refused to take revenge when those nations sent emissaries to him.

"When people are doing it, they are not doing it in the name of Islam," he said. "They may have other reasons. But Islam doesn't teach that. If you kill the ambassadors, how will you ever negotiate?"
    .....
"Our behavior — and it's the way educated people should behave — is people have a right to their own opinion."

"It's not that I approve or condone the kind of propaganda against the Muslims or Islam which some people have made a business out of," he said. "But we took the position that, you know, let him do it. It's a very small church. If we respond to him, it gives him more airtime."

To his friends, he said, he suggested that they send Jones more copies of the Quran: "I mean, if he feels happy that way, let him do it.

"So that's where we were coming from, and that's what I think in this situation. If they thought it was a bad movie, make a good movie out of it. Burning or killing doesn't solve anything. It only affects the image of Islam."
