Not to start a urinating contest or a contest of "mine is better" I would like to know what you all use for long range varmint hunting? Make, Caliber, and Glass. thanks
LaRue OBR, LT111 mount, leupold MK4 4.5-14 sf/mildot ETA: though to be honest i haven't shot it yet, waiting on a buddy to get in his LMT MWS .308 and scope it soe we can make a whole day out of it. the last critter i killed was a groundhog from about 30 ft with an old stevens single shot .22 boltaction and subsonic ammo in the middle of town at my sisters house, i had to be a bit covert as though i had permission from the town manager to eliminate the pesky ground hogs that have been plagueing the neighborhood, it is also officially illegal to fire a gun in town. it was one of those it's NOT ok for folks to shoot in town, but here is how i would like for you to go about doing it, wink wink, situations...
Savage 110 FP 308 Win. Super sniper 10x fixed mil-dot rectical 3LB Lighten trigger Harris bipod. XR750
Savage 24VA in .222/20ga. No scope - yet. Ok, haven't even gone varmint hunting - just passed my safety course last month, BUT I CAN'T WAIT!!!!
My own brew.... 16" SS HBAR carbine with a 1-8" twist. Free floated with a SWS rail. Scoped with a Leupold 1.5-5x MR/T with illuminated reticle. .223 chambered.... no 5.56 in this baby. Only the heavier match bullets. I have yet to change the trigger from a stock single stage...... in due time. It will put quarter size groups on paper at 100...... 10 round shot groups. Best small group.... about .3 MOA. It prefers the 69 gn HPBT or the 75 gn HPBT.
For varmints in my opinion thirty cal is overkill. I use a Rem. 788 in .222 topped with a BSA 6x24x50, a Interarms .223 bolt gun with a 3x9x40 Simmons, a Remington 700 in .270 with a Leupold 4x14.5x50 tactical, and a Rock River Arms AR .556 with a two stage trigger topled with a Nikon 3x9x40.
