So I've been using an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator, a company that sells bandwidth on one or more of the big cell phone provider's networks) called BOOM Mobile for the past few years now, and been pretty happy with the service. Got home from work tonight, and tried to make a phone call. It's telling me no phone service available. WTH? Tried to log onto my account on the computer. No go. Tried to chat with them. No go. Finally called their 800 number, and after a brief hold, I get a recording, saying that the company has decided to file bankruptcy! And if I need the info to port my number to a new provider, please e-mail them. GREAT. Since I use C-Spire for my fiber internet, and know that they also offer wireless service, I decide to try their website first, before going with another MVNO. And ended up signing up for wireless service with them, 75GB/month data, with a new phone (they won't accept a 2024 Moto Razr on their network.... really, the only disappointment of the whole deal), for ~$20 more a month than I was paying just for the fiber internet service. Really can't argue with that, and I'm getting a Google Pixel 10a phone, plus 5 years locked in rate. I'll pick up the new phone tomorrow after I get off work, and be back in service. Still bummed about the Razr, though. I really liked that phone!
I got a Tracfone plan that costs less than $20 a month. I power up the phone, make a call, and shut it down again.
