I have liked that poem, ever since I had read it in its entirety....the re-enactment is pretty good in the YouTube clip, except for the method of cleaning the rifle with a 'pull-through' and the bit of 4x2 (piece of service flannelette). The 'pull-through's' weighted end should be inserted via the breach, and pulled through from the muzzle end of the rifle.

The poem represents the ambivalence of many societies towards the military / warrior class....in much the same way there is an ambivalence in some societies concerning women....expressed as consignment to categories in the whore / saint dichotomy.

 

This has kicked off in S.Louisiana
