Sarah Adam's has got some info that'll keep you up at night ,, and make you ready to spit bullets in the morning.

 

Just finished re-reading Stephen King's "Dark Tower" (aka Gunslinger) series, last week. Never realized how many of his other novels intertwined with that storyline! So I found a good list of his other books that have reference to, or characters in the Dark Tower series, and I'll be reading those now.
Like "Salem's Lot" has Father Callahan, who appears in the 5th book, and continues in the 6th book of the Dark Tower series. Amazing, what that author has written! (even if I think his politics stink out loud! LOL)

 

It's a hard one to put down. Fictional story of a Southern girl from Eastern North Carolina in the 1930's.

 

Re reading Stanley Karnow History of Vietnam, all I can say is my generation got screwed by our government

 

Book 2 in a four part series.

With the new book mark the kids got me for Christmas.

 

I am snoozing through several sci-fantasy audio books of moderate value. Nothing special, really.

 

I got four Tarzan books for Christmas. I'm a big Edgar Rice Burroughs fan.

Read all 102 chapters of this one again this week.
Third time I've read it. First was on Frugal's Forum when it was still being written, with a chapter a week popping up. It gets better every time I read it.

 

I listened to this one on cassette tapes that I checked out from the Base library. Made my hour long daily commute to work much more pleasant.

I think I'm enjoying reading it even more.

 

Civil War Commando by Jerome Preisler. A historical account of William Cushing's naval escapades- most notably his mission to find the ironside vessel CSS Albermarle and sink her. A good read that uses Cushing's letters home to recreate the zeitgeist of the time and make it relatable to those of us living today.

 

The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness by Jonathan Haidt

After more than a decade of stability or improvement, the mental health of adolescents plunged in the early 2010s. Rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide rose sharply, more than doubling on many measures. Why?

In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt (pronounced "height") lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this “great rewiring of childhood” has interfered with children’s social and neurological development, covering everything from sleep deprivation to attention fragmentation, addiction, loneliness, social contagion, social comparison, and perfectionism. He explains why social media damages girls more than boys and why boys have been withdrawing from the real world into the virtual world, with disastrous consequences for themselves, their families, and their societies.

Most important, Haidt issues a clear call to action. He diagnoses the “collective action problems” that trap us, and then proposes four simple rules that might set us free. He describes steps that parents, teachers, schools, tech companies, and governments can take to end the epidemic of mental illness and restore a more humane childhood.

Haidt has spent his career speaking truth backed by data in the most difficult landscapes—communities polarized by politics and religion, campuses battling culture wars, and now the public health emergency faced by Gen Z. We cannot afford to ignore his findings about protecting our children—and ourselves—from the psychological damage of a phone-based life.

 

Did Muhammad Exist by Robert Spencer and the consensus so far is doubtful, then again, I just started.

 

Reagan's War (2002) by Peter Schweizer. It's the story of President Ronald Reagan's 40-year fight against Communism, from the streets of Hollywood to Washington D.C. and all corners of the globe. I read it 20+ years ago and decided to read it again. I have a stack of new and old books waiting to be read.
