Iron Eyes Cody was indeed not Native American. While he famously portrayed Native Americans in Hollywood and was honored by the Native American community for his work, he was actually of Italian descent. His real name was Espera Oscar de Corti, and he was born to Italian immigrants.
Iron Eyes Cody was a well-known actor in Hollywood, often portraying Native American characters in films. He was particularly famous for his role as "The Crying Indian" in Keep America Beautiful commercials. However, his actual background was Italian.
He was the son of Sicilian immigrants.
