My uncle has really solid doors everywhere it counts and then puts the appropriate gate latches on and even uses crossbars. He says it's so you can't break through the door easily if you get trapped. He has a 10' Flag about 50' up the county tried to get him to take down and he told 'em bring body bags. He's a vietnam vet in a wheelchair and I love him dearly. The county backed off.

About the only thing you will really need is a dog.

I have a driveway alarm that really helps now. Probably of no use after the SHTF. My old dog up and died on me. Miss him and while he was alive he was the best alarm system I know of. Would wake up out of a sound sleep and run to the door when someone came up onto the porch. I have no idea how a dog can do it but they do. In thinking about home defense, I have reached the conclusion that the best defense is space. You have to have both a warning system. Usually some area in which you control access to, and a method of either preventing access or allow physical restrictions to be used. Ie, shoot the SOB. If you are a student in a dorm, you are in my mind scr####. Trip wires, window and door alarms, cameras, etc, all require that you have control of some area that you can both observe and hopefully secure. Even if you are using force to prevent entry, bobby traps and such, you will still need distance. In my mind the old real estate motto is still very good advice. If SHTF the three biggest factors are going to be location, location, and location. If you are not with your preps and things go bad, you may either never make it to them or some one else may have claimed them. If you aren't prepared and don't have the ability and space to protect them, you either have no preps or some one else may reap the benefits.
