I have so far (complete rifles): 3) 5.45x39 (two fixed Bulgarians I built, and 1 folder Bulgy I built) 4) 7.62x39 (one WASR-10, one Romy build, one Hungarian AMD, one Yugo Krink) 1) 5.56x45 (Romy SAR-3) I will post pics after I get some upated ones
Just have a SAR-2 (5.45x39). Used to have a Hungarian (7.62x39) but I hated it so I gave it away to a gentleman in Oklahoma. I believe he's very happy with it and I'm happy with what I have now.
I would like to buy/build a 5.45x39 someday, after shoot Magnus' I really liked it. However, I do like that the AK's I have now all 7.62x39 all have the same mags and shoot the same ammo. I like the 7.62x39, it should work fine at intermediate ranges.
E.L., first AK I ever shot was at a shoot in Missouri. A friend of mine let me shoot his underfolder. I had a blast and that made me want one. Unfortunately, at that time not having a clue about AK's I got one that didn't work worth a dang (well that and there was no way I was going to afford the preban like he had - he's a collector of C&R rifles though he does have some more current ones). What I got soured me on the 7.62x39 AK's all together. Don't seem to mind the SKS's though...but I absolutely adore my AK in 5.45x39. Even if it only makes it to the range once a year or so. Guess that's the price to pay when I've a few guns and not enough time these days. I spend more time now with a couple of pricey sporterized/target rifles and handguns than anything else anymore.
The AK that MAgnus helped me build runs like a dream. It just seems to point so natuarally, and comes up so quick, that I don't miss very often with it on the snap shots I have taken.
AK's are great fun! I adore my 5.45 rifles also...I even picked up a Tantal kit so I will have another one The Romies are very comfy and I plan to "Bubba" one out with the T6 Stock, Galil hand guard with rails of course, and probably and ergo grip. Then I will have the Factory battle field pick up look. Anyway, no matter how you cut it I like all calibers. I like the 7.62 for cheap blasting, and the power of .30cal. I like the 5.45 for better accuracy, and lighter recoil. (not that the .30 is too much) I like the 5.56 for ammo availibility in SHTF situation. (the AR has to grow on my still in reguard to long term reliabilty)
magnus, that's what made me fall in love with the 5.45 - the accuracy! Totally blew away the 7.62 AK's. SKS's that's a totally different story. But it's a dream of an AK for me. Stock is still a bit short even though I'm a girl but it's about right for mom so I'm going to leave it like it is.
Yeah I have a NATO length stock on my shooter 74, and it is a DREAM!!! I need a recoil pad for my sidefolder to get it a bit longer. I am pretty tall though.
Hey EL, If where you buddy I would go ahead and pick up a kit before they are totally gone. I recommend the Bulgarians Call Bob at Akron Armory and tell him I sent you and to take good care of ya. Ask him about a good deal on mags too.
But if I gave you 12 then I wouldn't have any left!!! Seriously though maybe I should change what I told him...you've built more. How about 2 for him and 2 for you...that sounds better. The heck with everybody else. By the way I think I have some of those plunger things for the gas tubes (for an AK-47) would you like them? - no cost just to get them out of the closet.
I am just ribbin' ya Thanks for the offer, I just use a old tee shirt to clean the bas tube when I do
Sigh... I realize I'm really bad with technical words magnus so let me try this again. I believe I have some of those rods that you use with the AK system. You know they're chrome or steel or whatever. Look like a piston on one end? Don't know why I have them - would you like them.
That would be a gas piston Are they US made? If so they should be marked. How about you hold on to them and we could have a give away after we go public? I am sure I could find something to through in a pot!
Going to make me go find them again are you. I can't even remember why I have them (just like I can't remember why I have several other pieces of the AK system (I did get rid of some of them - mostly because people I knew could use them). These I just didn't know about. I'll go find them again and see if I can find if they're stamped.
Don't feel bad - I do that all the time with guns. Let me see, I think I've got at least 3 rifles - no wait make that 5 I've still got to take out and shoot. One I've owned at least 4 or 5 years now. And at least one handgun...nope make that two handguns now (I forgot I bought the S&W .357).
BAD DOG!!!! Pooor Ak's...you can't do that to them....anything else I can let slipp but AK's need to be shot!!! I ussually don't have one more than a few hrs before I shoot it! Then it can sit some, but dang) Poor AK's!
