What ever happened to the Militias?

All I've ever seen is a bunch of scattered groups of Cajun Navy s here.
As a rule they only return fire if fired upon,Other than that they save people,animals,cook and drink beer.
I do have friends in these groups,One actually hit a fire hydrant over in east Texas while looking for people flooded out.
Ended up breaking a finger,He just keep on motoring
