I wish them luck....but doubt it will ever be allowed to happen. The liberal leadership of California has too much to lose (power, prestige and tax dollars collected), if they allowed it. Besides, who would they then tax to death, if the conservative counties left? The illegal aliens??

If you look at the map, for the proposed 3-way split of California, you'll see how cleverly they disguised, what looks like a chance for the more conservative areas of the state to escape from the liberal leadership, but what is actually just a chance to add two more liberal states to the country (as well as the additional 2 liberal senators, for each of the 2 additional/new states, to Congress). Even if California passed it, I'm betting that the current conservative-controlled Congress would tell them NO, they can't do it.

Just look at the lines, for the split. Granted, the population numbers, for each of the 3 areas, are pretty close to being equivalent. But that's where any attempt at equivalency ends! Here's what they're proposing, and why the liberals would still have control:
    1. "Northern California", which contains both the greater San Francisco Bay area AND the current state capitol, Sacramento. BOTH of which are liberal strongholds. That's a new "blue" state, guaranteed.
    2. California, which will contain Los Angeles, and all the counties along the coastline, up to just shy of San Jose. LA will contain the bulk of the population, so again, "blue" state, guaranteed.
    3. "Southern California", which will contain most of the Central Valley, as well as San Diego. Guess where the bulk of the population would be? San Diego will overcome any conservatives, elsewhere in that region, with their liberal leanings, and guarantee a 3rd "blue" state.

So what's the advantage to anyone but the liberals, do tell?? (n) california-split.

all 3 areas seemed to have at least 1 major city in them and those cities are part of the problem so IMHO dividing the state up in tha manner shown would fix NOTHING... which is what you said if I read it right...

The plan is intentionally Gerrymandered to ensure blue control of all three pieces. Given that California is ~2/3 left and ~1/3 right you would think that one of the three divisions would at least be competitive for the right, but that can't happen here. Northen California will be just like Oregon - the population centers will ride roughshod over the rural areas. Same with Southern California.

Move that Northern California border north of SFC and let Southern Oregon join to form Jefferson State and I'll move there in a heartbeat.

I have to admit liking the idea of shattering kali, but there has to be a better way to balance the political forces than this three state splitup indicates.

Years ago - late 80s, there was a move to split NV and Ca.

So Nv and SoCal would merge and the northern counties would merge. Kinda like was first proposed waay back in the day.

Never going to happen - bank won't let it.

Even more telling in the proposed divisions with the finacial aspect of where the most money is! Also note how the farming gets proportioned off!

Actually, the division of California comes down the the interpretation of a semi-colon !

Read that key wording....."New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State;..."

The semi-colon at the end of the words "other State;" indicates the authors meant that as a stand alone phrase, not connected to the rest of the sentence....in other words, a complete prohibition of the division of any State. Just flat can't do it.

"Well what about West Virginia ?" you might ask. In that case, Virginia had seceded from the Union, and was no longer bound by the US Constitution. Thus, the western portion could, and did, apply to Congress to become a State....and was accepted into the Union.

The rest of the sentence "...nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress." uses commas, and I would interpret that to mean the JUNCTION of States (or parts of States) requires legislative approval.

Is secession forbidden by the Constitution? If not, kali could secede then split up, and the splits apply to join the Union. Far fetched, but --

Hang on Fellas, I'm guessing none of yall live in Socal?

You're not seeing this quite right.......as a resident of San Diego County, and fairly familiar with this proposal, let me elucidate...

The ballot measure is being pushed by a billionaire venture capitalist with the intention of getting the conservative southern part of the state free from the northern idiots. Right now, the state has 2 Dem Senators. The change would add 2 more Dems, but add 2 Repubs for a net zero. The numbers for the House of Reps would remain about the same....., but.....the nation would now gain about 30-40% of California's electoral votes in every presidential election, which are now all going to the Blues.

""Southern California", which will contain most of the Central Valley, as well as San Diego. Guess where the bulk of the population would be? San Diego will overcome any conservatives, elsewhere in that region, with their liberal leanings, and guarantee a 3rd "blue" state.""
Not so.....San Diego County is largely Red. The City of San Diego is about 50/50, but the outlying areas are strongly Red...horse country, cowboy hats, rednecks by the hundreds of thousands....the city population is a little over 1 mil, the county population is over 3 mil....The other counties in the proposed new southern State are as Red as you can get. So this new southern state would be (my guess) about 75/25 Red over Blue. See article: San Diego cities among state’s most conservative, study finds

This is a huge overall win for the 'oppressed' conservatives in Cali, and an overall win for the country as well!!! That is why Conservatives support this and liberals are scared. You're right, they will lose their hard working tax base and send all of the illegals and homeless packing to the north. If the illegals can even get across the border any more with a conservative state blocking their entry. Also the southern state gets 2 of the nations largest agricultural areas: Imperial Valley and the San Joaquin Valley

You are right in one respect though, the liberals will vote this down and never let it happen, the state would go upside down so fast.....recent polls show as much with Libs against this and the Good guys for it...

No it would fix a lot! A win for those of us 'stuck' in SoCal and a win for the entire nation.....(Electoral Votes/cheaper crop prices etc...)

Be nice if they could confine the jurisdiction of the Ninth Circuit to the borders of one of the new states, maybe the one with LA. Other circuit courts could be assigned areas vacated by the Ninth. Might help to contain their insanity to those who are just as daffy.

    Mostly talk.
While the regions could be separate states based on demographics/business/politics. It will not happen in our lifetime.
not enough political nor voter will to make it happen.

Nope, just more spin for public consumption.

Even more, those in power will not let it happen...but it is past time, CA is too large and too F-ed up, almost ungovernable as it is now......but you're right, won't happen....but we can hope.....
