A Wisconsin sheriff says he released an ad calling on residents to defend themselves because the old model of having a citizen call 911 and wait for help isn't always the best option.

In the ad, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. tells residents that when it comes to personal safety: "I need you in the game." He urges citizens to learn to use firearms so they can "fight back" until authorities arrive.

The ad has drawn sharp criticism from other area officials. The president of the Milwaukee Deputy Sheriffs' Association, Roy Felber, says it sounds like a call to vigilantism.

But Clarke says he can either whine about budget cuts that have reduced the number of deputies or call on citizens to work with officers in some situations.

Sounds like this Constitutionally Elected Sheriff, is looking for a willing and able number of Irregular Malita Men to be available for Posse Duty.... Not a bad notion, in my way of thinking... And he has a few whiners in among his Deputies, who aren't going to keep their Jobs, when the ObamaBucks run out....

Better a trained law abiding gun user than an untrained one....it works better for the law abiding citizen and the police alike.

The purpose of the police is to document victims and catch the criminal; they have no legal responsibility to protect anyone.

You could be shot in the streets, bleeding out and the cops' job is to catch the guy who did it, not make sure you get medical attention. i went through the hiring process for the CHP, and took fire for my answer on that question. i stopped for the victim, And I should not have. My response was "the fastest guy on the force is MOTOROLA, that I would radio for assistance and forward the description. I would assist the victim. " I was told my actions were wrong, and that my duty was to pursue. he who broke the law, for judgement and punishment.

Could you not radio for assistance of the victim?

They would have allowed it, but running and radios don't work well for wind. the point was driven home, the victim is a stat, not a priority.

Thank goodness the NSW Police Force does things rather differently...life is the priority...apprehension of the perp comes second after that...in most cases.

Assessing the wind effects on a microphone was really quick thinking.

If your training included not even reporting a person who could easily be bleeding out, I cannot call it training. As you were the trainee not the trainer, there is no flame to you when I say I wouldn't call it training.

The reason I say the training sucked is when in a fight, soldiers yell "Medic." As gunfire, grenades, RPGs, etc affect the ability to be heard, they still yell "Medic." What is weird is somehow usually the Medic hears them.

The point they wished to drive home, was :"The victim is not your concern, the perp is." They also ask lots of background questions about drug use, sex, and the point there was NOT what you said but if you would say the same thing later. They stated before the questions begin "We will ask these again in an hour, a day, a week, and a month from now. If any of your answers change, you will be dropped from consideration, this is to make sure your testimony will hold up on the stand. If you lie, you had better lie convincingly."
They asked about if you had ever taken (long list of substances) and how long ago.
They asked about sex practices. (Including one question I could not resist having fun with.;)) They asked :"have you ever had sex with a small animal?" (I swear to God) I wrote "What constitutes small?" :D And yes I had to explain the comment many times.....

Nope they wanted you to become a Bean Eater, so that your "wind" would push you along faster, while running after the Perp.....

‘I Need You in the Game’: Wis. Sheriff Tells Residents to Learn How to Use a Gun to Defend Themselves

"Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. has a message for residents: learn how to use a gun.

With budget cutbacks putting a strain on law enforcement, simply calling 911 might not cut it in a life-or-death or situation, Clarke said in a new radio ad this month. Safety is “no longer a spectator sport,” he says. “I need you in the game.”

“With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option,” Clark adds. “You can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back. But are you prepared?”
