Using a froe to split a log (felled tree)
I have a froe, in my collection of woodworking tools.
More detailed use of the Froe:
No one watch Roy Underhill??
M8 , Roy is nice to watch , but I'll stick with my Woodmizer.
I only ever used a froe to split cedar blocks for shakes. Used it with an aluminum/cable handle mallet. Mainly to split 4-6 ft diameter blocks small enough for the shake mill to handle. You can build up strong arms swinging an 8# mallet all day for months.
In the Forest Service we would take those blocks and split of 1" thick shakes to roof our smaller buildings.
