Italian Soldiers in WWII also ate it...allegedly Soldiers in most armies have slang words for food, the cooks that prepare it, and the places where food is eaten. In WWII...Italian Soldiers called canned meat "Asino Morto", meaning Dead Donkey. At least that French Poilu knows that his donkey ration would be fresh...add garlic, herbs, pepper and salt, a potato or two, carrots, onions,... and a little red wine..... a feast fit for fo a king!
The photographer who took a shot of the poilu who was told..."You're cooking dinner...and here's the main ingredient"....poor bugger....it looks like he was also carrying 3 rounds of medium mortar ammo as well.
