I was chopping down some of the taller weeds in the back yard and was looking for my little Osage Orange tree. I'd grown it from seed, and the poor thing had been accidentally mowed to ground level a couple times. I expected it to be 7-10" tall and hiding among the weeds. What I found was 7' of multiple stalk, straight and happy hedge apple. I hadn't expected the death of the surrounding pines to have such a drastic effect on this one. It's twisted and gnarled brother is competing for light with a Holly, so it'll now be the one playing catch-up.

 

So no osage orange?

 

Yes, that was it. Sorry. Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera) = hedge apple, horse apple, bois d'arc, bodark, bodock, bow-wood, monkey ball, monkey brains, yellow-wood and mock orange.

honey harvest today from one hive, 5 gallons, uncut, unfiltered honey. We have nine hives. My middle daughter helped for the first time.

 

Nice ,,, I added a 10 frame Super to 1 of my hives today . This is my 1st year of beekeeping , and luckily , my hives are doing really well , my bees were really active today , going to do some Mite testing on them in a week or so ,,,

 

150 years ago pioneer women had to find bee trees if they wanted to have a sweeting ingredient. I read a letter written by my GGGF’s brother complaining his wife had found only three bee trees that year.

 

What is the plan for using that sticky runny gold? (I volunteer to receive a sample and evaluate it ---)

Wow! Nine hives, and if we assume 5 gals each, that's commercial quantities.

 

Right now we give away a little and sell the rest at a farmers market my partner runs. We are buying hives and equipment. We are trying to build up to 20 hives. We have 77 adjacent acres between us. She caught 7 swarms this spring. That’s her this spring catching a couple of swarm. She’ll do.

 

Aww. She’s from the mean streets of Honolulu. Pretty girl.

 

This cat was spotted in our area a few days ago. They've been much more active since the fires a couple of years back.
They lost millions of acres, so they do what they do.
