I got a call from That Woman that she'd found a dead rabbit under the deck. First thing I wonder is why Whitey, probably not the same possum we originally pinned the name on, but the latest of the white possums that live in our yard, didn't clean it up.
Opossums are great for handling cats that die in inaccessible places and they've been doing this service for me for more than 30 years.

Initially all I could see through the thick grape vines was a mummified body and a lot of loose white fur. When I got the first tuft of fur out and saw the white fur with scattered long white hairs I suspected it was a possum. I dragged him out by his prehensile tail and verified by the shape of his skull and paws that it was Whitey. All the skin that wasn't against the ground had hardened into dried brown leather.

Not sure if he was mauled by dogs, hit by a car or just died of natural causes. Must've been in the winter, since we smelled nothing.

I do hope there's another generation of Whitey's still out there. They provide a valuable service.

 

I agree. Probably rare enough to have two veterans on the same headstone that it was missed. I miss both of them.

 

Pears, apples and figs are all off to a great start this year. Grapes always do well. We're about 5" behind on rain, but the black berries seem to be the only ones that are affected. They're small.

 

I made it home from the range in time to mow the grass and pick some fruit. I need to start harvesting squirrel and crow meat along with the fruit since I've found both sampling my fermented pears.

I can't even keep up with the figs. The tree is insanely overgrown and producing like crazy.

 

I stood pretty much in one spot and picked two half gallon bags full of beautiful sweet muscadines.

 

Hungry, and vicious, little buggers. This was part of a series. I set up the 35mm camera on a tripod with a zoom lens, and an autowinder that took two or three frames per second. This picture had the most, caught eight hummers at the same time .

I have a couple landmarks where I turn that are hard to miss.

 

Today's picking scores. Not pictured is a new Lee .440 round ball and .45 cal. R.E.A.L. bullet combination mold.

 

Maybe not the worst pistol ever made, but the Clerke RG24 is probably in the lower 10% of the quality scale.

Shoots amazingly well with a wiggly barrel.

They were $15 dealer cost in 1970. Still worth the same $15 today.
