What's the best method for cooking other than wood?

Short of having a fireplace or wood burning stove what's the best and easiest way of cooking in an emergency, long term (more than a month). Currently I have a single burner Colman stove and propane bottles.

As far as cost goes would I be better off getting a adapter and a few 20 lbs tanks or just stick with the bottles or are there much better stoves available that will be cheaper and easier to stock up on fuel.

Good question. Can't wait to here some answers.

As for me, I'm looking real hard at solar ovens and grills. Obviously their use is limited to whether it's sunny or not. I'm looking at doing a box oven and a parabolic grill. I'm convienced that they work and serve a usefullness concerning preparedness.

I would say propane is a good option as well. Fairly cheap and dependable. If NO fuel was available at all, and short of having a wood stove, one could construct a solar oven out of basic materials. It takes a little longer to cook but they can be very effective.

I also agree that propane is a good option. How ever I would look into a larger cook top. I personally have a "base camp" size cook top. This thing is 3 1/2 feet tall, about 3' square with 2 full size burners, and a long griddle burner.

Recently I seen a portable propane cooker that have 2 burners and a oven. If didn't already have that big one, that is the one I would buy.

Also look a Harbor freight. Right after Katrina I bought my son a smallish unit that that had 2 burners a a LITTLE oven. (6"x8") It worked well for hurricane emergency cooking in his all electric house. They have several different models.

"Best" is really subjective in this regard. Is portability an issue? Colemans are great from a portability standpoint, but if that really doesn't matter then you could look at alot of other options:

regular gas grill with side burner - useful for cooking up some regular good eats too. During hurricane Charlie this was my only way of cooking for two weeks. I made coffee, home made minestrone, garlic bread, all sorts of stuff on standard $150 grill from a box store. These are easier to use than a coleman camping stove. Bigger propane tanks (I am getting an inground one installed this summer) and the tank refills are available everywhere.

Ceramic grill - like big green egg, Kamado, etc. I got mine for smoking ribs, pork butts and brisket. But I've also baked pizza and breads in it too. Very efficient, a handful of charcoal is enough fuel to bake few loaves of bread. Plus you can make some of the finest ribs ever while you wait for SHTF.

Dutch Oven - Just build a fire and let it burn down to coals. Spread them out thinly, then set the dutch oven on top, and put some of the coals on top. Can bake and cook all sorts of goodies in one of these bad boys.

Solar Oven was mentioned already. I made one in boy scouts a hundred years ago, and was amazed that you could cook food with the sun.

You mentioned the Dutch Oven. This is a great option. I have a very old Dutch and it is amazing what you can do with one. Good idea.

I thought this was pretty cool: YouTube - gas cylinder stove pt 3

You could also buy the 50-gallon drum kits to turn those into a furnace. I remember years ago my father and I made one and used a second connected above it, too. With high use, the barrel will burn out in the bottom, but they work well for a long time. One could weld steel to the barrels to make them heavier and more durable also.

I came across a stove pipe oven that looks like an interesting addition to a wood burner.
