If the US goes into a depression, or a personal finical struggle, or any reason you want to live cheap, I posted this for ideas on 1$ per person meals.

    Breakfast is the eaisyt one.
3 fried eggs and couple bites of fruit, even a potato.

Grits way less than a dollar.

Panckakes and bacon stil less than a dollar.

    Lunch is even eaiser.
Generally I do not eat lunch too busy working.

My 2 kids eat at school for 1.65$ so for lunch and breakfast Im still less than a dollar.

Supper or Dinner depending where you live is the killer.

I like to have one good meal a day and the kids like t-bone steak as much s I do, and can eat like I do.

I can cook spagetti garlic bread and salid with fixings for around 6 dollars.

Litttle ceasers pizza and cook some garlic bread at home

    around 6$

Just looking for shared experiences and ideas for cheap meals.

Rice is still about the cheapest main meal ingredient going. Add most anything to flavor it, from plain butter to beans, meat, boullion cubes.....
Of course down south here, grits works any time of day!

Growing any good veggies can be 'dirt cheap' too.

I have been eating a LOT of $1 meals...Those nissin brand noodles!
On sale I have found them 2 for a dollar and when you get coupons, you buy 2 and get 1 free! They come in a variety of flavors...Not bad and filling! It ain't steak I'll admit! I love meat so it can get boring, but then you get creative....
Added some veggies ( canned) and 1 can will do at least 2 meals. With the chicken or beef flavored noodles you can always toss in some cans of chicken or beef.

Larryinaslabama - I've been told that grit trees produce all year. Is this true or are grits a seasonal crop?

Grits dont grow on trees, we have Money trees but the darn things just dont produce anymore.

I remembe an old movie I dont recall the name or what it was about, but it starred Danny DeVito and for some reason he was in Bama Land.
The quote of the movie was " What the f@^* is a Grit?"

All joking aside Grits are a excellent survival prep food.

I worry about the sheer sodium quantity in those noodle flavor packets. ZOMG! Heart Attack in a cellophane pack.

loaf of homemade from scratch bread turned into toast, eggs from under the chickens scrambled with veggies from the garden, apples from the orchard. About 50 cents for 5 people. if you don't count labor and electricity costs.

No sodium=No flavor! Bring on the MSG!
    Nah, just kidding!
We had Ramen noodles, but they went rancid really quickly on us!
Rice, some veggies, some flavoring ( see boullion cubes) and a bit of water and cornstarch to make a gravy and VIOLA! A meal!
If and when I cna gets etup up njorth I'll have chickens and rabbits for meat and eggs! Not to mention a lot of garden stuff including fruit trees! I was told that apples should do well up there!

Ramen is okay for the occasional lunch at work (I call it 'the lunch of champions'!), I don't eat them too often. I get the "Yokosuba' brand with the microwave bowl - just add water, dump in the little veggie pack and nuke it! Then add in the flavoring - THAT's where the MSG and sodium are - use your own flavoring, it's much healthier.
Mac&Cheese use to be cheap, but that flavored grease they call cheese is getting more expensive now.

have you planted your trees yet?
Collendar Trees take a couple of years before bearing fruit
Grafted Take a few more than that.
From seedlings, Well your kids will enjoy the fruits of your labor

Definitely not plant in the spring and reap in the fall proposition.

MRE's might be go in a bug-out-bag but I sure would like a little more variety.

MRE's are an infitesimal portion of what i would consider in my pantry. One could probably get hundreds of pounds of rice, beans, wheat for the cost of a case of MREs. Add some Canned meat (home or store) and you eating like a king.
