Pretty sobering...China can damage US power grid

Not an issue if you have Backup Generation & Power.... or if you are Off-Grid, like me....

 

Couldn't happen to a NICER Bunch of Folks....

 

We can put each other in the dark or make each other glow..... they both sound so fantastic.....

 

So, disconnect the grid from the friggin' internet!! DUH!!!!!!!!!!

You would be surprised how integrated the power grid is to the internet through SCADA and assorted systems. With energy being routed through the grid/system from all sources (hydro/coal/solar/ect) there has to be a higher level of management, especially to control peak flow to heavy areas such as cities, as well as re-routing of circuits due to outages.... and that is the Achilles heel.

 

Ha! The power grid is the least of our worries. The Air Traffic Control system is just as vulnerable, as is the banking industry and the stock market. Either directly or indirectly, all systems can be breached through the internet. One computer connected to an Intranet, and the Internet concurrently provides a path for cyber attack.

 

I disagree only in the fact that if we loose power.... we loose all the other services at the same time.... caveman time in our day and age for sure. And with real time delivery of food, gas and so on.... the masses are going to get hungry & angry really quick

 

Most services will function as long as there is fuel for the standby generator systems. All Air Traffic Systems are backed up with power conditioning systems and diesel or gas generators, some with Solar. Telephone systems with battery arrays and generators. Most ISP's have standby power systems, but as you say.... only for a limited time.

 

The least of my favorites when it comes to internet hacking and downing of infrastructure is loss of power nationally.....

Most gas stations do not have generator back up.... and all of our food distribution works via transport....

 

But, no refrigeration, no street lights, and no water, power or sewer in some areas. No traffic signals, no commerce, and it wouldn't take long before the food riots started. People would be stealing big screen TVs that they could not watch... etc. Oh, I forgot..

 

Tek, I live in a similar circumstance and I will say that there are many ways to fortify your home....research and you will find much to enhance your domiciles safety level from intrusion. There are many threads discussing just this issue, covering things such as door reinforcement methods, pre-cutting plywood for window covering, sandbag uses and so on.

I agree, that in a subdivision, it is hard to hide the power generation ability you have....but the same could be said about the means to provide fresh water with rain catchment, cooking and so on (Opsec everyday). In a short term basis, many others may have back up power and you will blend in with them. But in the long term outage, you have to be very more concerned about your opsec and hiding your capability be it power, food, water and so on... think defensive (you are going to need a good defensive until you are ready/forced to move out due to circumstances). If others determine you are doing well...they may want what you have. Solar helps dramatically in the area of quite power, if you can hide your panels from casual view... just a thought. Anyways, think about the reinforcement of your home.... you have options and time right now to do the best you can.... get to work.
