Would You Risk Your Entire Family to Save One Person?

I found this survival scenario on another blog. I think it is an interesting exercise. Please play along- imagine if your family was gathered or if you don't have family, please think if your close friendsor partner was in another location. Grand kids or distant relatives but it is an interesting question- how much would you risk for one person?

A natural disaster (like a flood or a fire) is only an hour from hitting your home. You decide to evacuate your family to safer territory, but one of the kids is at a friend’s house located more than an hour away. You know the friend’s family doesn’t practice preparedness and is in harm’s way. Do you evacuate the family you have with you knowing you’ll be completely safe from the disaster? Or do you risk driving through the disaster as it hits to pick up the kid at the friend’s house?

In the link are other people responses but what would you do? Please take into consideration all that could happen if the family unit is divided. Those in the hurricane areas know what traffic is like in a pre-disaster evacuation. Then ask yourself do you have a plan for such a scenario. And if you have a plan, how often do you review the plan with your loved ones. Don't forget in today's world schedules change so what could have been a plan last year, may not apply now.

Cold and calculated....it would entirely depend on the "not prepared" teams usefullness in need of rescue DIRECTLY related to the crisis on hand.

Reality - If I loved them, i'd risk it all without hesitation therefor providing the best possible chance of success in a "time is of the essence" scenario.
YOLO and it aint worth living without love.

I'd pray and know exactly which choice to make.

@3M-TA3 & @Ganado are there two people you love? Imagine one is with you and the other is at the unprepared persons place. Say your wife is with you but your parent is an hour away. What are you going to risk for those you love?

I could not leave one behind if it were my grandchild or child. I would send the others on their way and get to the missing one if I had to crawl.

I'm with you on this one @T. Riley. I would gear up and send my family to safety and take alternative transport to get my other child.

If a child or teen I would go after them. if you have two adults you can divide an conquer. The real question is would you drag the other family with you. I probably would. If I trusted them enough for my child to visit them then I better haul them with me.

No kids and other family is to far away to even consider going after. Unless the wife is visiting her family she will be no more then 1 hour from home and I would risk everything to get her back home.

I'm looking at this from a different angle. Why is the family member away (with sheeple) when there is a real likelihood of a disaster striking? This situation should never have happened in the first place.
Having said that, the screw-up would be my fault...so the family would go on without me, while I alone rescued the other member from the sheeple.
    Damn, I hate sheeple.... :cautious:

Can't answer for anyone but IMHO an man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. And a man has gotta answer that question for himself. We coiuld screw this up to the point that it's an impossible to win scenario, but in my experiece in life so far it's never been so. Of course I don't live in a third world middle easter zealots hell hole either.

In the above senerio, and if I were 15 years younger, I would send AlaskaChick to safety, with the bulk of Family, and I, and Oldest Son, would go get the other Family Member. Since both AlaskaChick, and I, are Hams, we would always have Comms, while we were apart, to coordinate the reunification of the Family. She would use the Family Van, (Mormon Assault Vehicle) and my Son, and I, would be in the 4X4 Truck.

It's just me and mom here, and since neither of us drive for medical reasons, if we were separated an hour's drive away, depending on the emergency, nothing really could be done. Even if I was able to somehow get to her, no guarantee of getting her home safely. If she was in our 'town' which is only 5miles away, I would try and go get her, taking supplies with me, since I don't know how long it would take me to get her home, she's not very mobile.

As far as saving the other family, I may not have the resources to facilitate that. It could severely reduce the possibility for anyone in the group to survive. That, and the fact that my alternate transportation will only accommodate two people. You have to consider shelter resources, food and water reserves, the ability to defend the group (weapons knowledge) and a whole realm of survival skills and abilities that none of those other folks possess. They would be your personal welfare cases.

They would get a 1 minute "Warning Speech" while I was picking up my Immediate Family Member, and we would depart, Post Haste.... for the reUnification of OUR Immediate FAMILY.... THAT'S IT, Period..... We take care of OUR OWN, FIRST.... Once that is accomplished, then we would see what could be done for Others, in need... and that would include Extended Family, who may not be prepared, like we are...

Too many unknown variables to offer a sensible coherent solution. The best one can do is apply some guiding principles.

    1. Which option gives the most probable chance of successfully saving as many people that I care about as possible; including myself?
    2. What risks am I reasonably prepared to take to achieve item 1
    3. Are there more than 2 actual options, and what courses of actions can I take to expand the number of options, and widen the scope of success of the most preferred option.
    4. Do all the people whom I care about justify the same level of risk/sacrifice?
    5. My priority of effort would be:
          • My grandchildren and their parents,
          • My children without dependent children of their own.
          • Siblings and their broods, depending on their utility to my own immediate family's survival..
          • Others, (including more distant relations), depending on their utility to my survival and my family's survival.
          • Parents, and spouses to the extent that they contribute to the survival of my immediate family.
My reasoning may appear to seem somewhat heartless when it comes to my own parents and spouse, but I would expect no less of my own children in relation to me, nor any less of my parents and spouse were they to make the same decisions about me in respect of their family responsibilities.

Without humanity I am nothing. Depending on the situation I would get my wife to safety (o safe enough), while I went to get Dad.
Everyone dies. It's just a matter of when and where. The only thing you have control over is how you live.

No. Not really. Kobayashi maru, everybody dies, you just chose how. This is more Sophie's choice, choosing who lives and who dies.
