The dogs must get awfully confused when they make a detection that doesn't reveal the toy, but the handler goes nuts with excitement and satisfaction anyway.

My father bred and sold bird dogs and I helped train them. Protection/guard dogs are easier to train as all that is wanted is a response to anything out of the ordinary. It takes more work to keep a dog in improved cylinder range than to teach them to bark at anything strange.

Actually as they reacted to the dog biscuits in grandson's back pack; drug dogs like dog biscuits as much as drugs. I'm not too sure about donuts. ;)

I had an Aussi I affection trained for tracking in SAR didn't need any thing but appreciation lovin for doing her job.
All you had to do was let her smell an article of clothing belonging to the one your looking for, and turn her lose.
Finding a dog that loves to learn is half the trick ,maintaining all the training is the other half.
Learning how to read your animal as he responds to his senses is critical he is talking to you , you just have to listen(pay attention)
Wild animals too are no different, they read your body language and discern whether you are a threat or not. whether you see them or not .
Sadly this modern generation is loosing this skill .

Members of the group are either : ASSETS or LIABILITIES. ASSETS should be kept and LIABILITIES disposed of. This sounds harsh but, theoretically a wheelchair bound person may at first glance seem to be a LIABILITY. But after a closer look you find he is a communications genius so he is moved to the ASSET group and on and on and on......AD INFINITUM..

Trying to assemble a group post SHTF has the thinnest chance of survival .
Cowards will give up security at the slighted hint of a threat ,no matter what their skills are.
There will be those wiling to compromise security for the pathetic trap being laid before them.
Kids will be sent knocking at your door, how are you going to respond ,,actually , especially if certain members of the group are soft hearted ?
If one of your group goes out side, and is shot, who goes after him??
How many people is it worth sacrificing their life, to attempt to retrieve a rebellious kid that won't listen to instruction.
A great deal of discipline is going to be required to survive in this environment.
What is the greatest range you can see?
and your weapon is capable of reaching?
Guaranteed , some raiders will have the capability better than your self .
The problem in most situations is that the person willing to self sacrifice, is usually more important kept alive.

buildings made of wood are not safe in the long run. fact.
Any thing combustable is a liability ,fire wise , however brick and mortar are not so great when it comes to earth quakes .
Reasonably sized steel structures can stand up to a lot of bad environments .
the Quonset hut stands up to most environments very well . It's just not your most popular design in modern arcetectur.
If I thought I could get away with it , that's what I'd build , with an under ground basement, and be happy.
Any thing you make air tight however can be a liability as well ,so alternative method of entry an air filtration are a must.
Security in this environment needs to be as up to date as possible with back up systems as well.

I plan to put microphones through out the property in strategic locations others might hide in giving me heads up on threats .

Here is a little exercise, I came up with for ourselves. Get an old map and circle every built up area near were you are that has a population of 100,000 plus that is within 300 miles. 300 miles equals apprx. 1 tank of gas. I was in shock. I also looked at lines of drift after Katrina. People west of the Miss. in NO went west mostly to Texas, those on the east side travelled north and mostly crossed into AR. and up to Springfield MO. As they roamed farther and farther to get lodging etc. Lines of drift can take people where you might not expect. Also when looking at the map in regards to city populations take into account what I call the Metropolitan population of the city. It will shock you. People are the greatest threat. Natural chokepoints are another factor. Bridges and mountain passes.

If you can find one of these it's money well spent. You can daisy chain probes together to increase your coverage. It has mode that will sound an audible alarm or a light if you need a silent alert.

I think of all the threads on this forum this one means the most to me. Finally after a decade of wasted foods and other mistakes I bit the bullet and bought 25 year shelf life survival food. Mostly non meat items based on vegetables , fruits and carbs but have decided no more canned goods from the grocery store and no more Im almsot 61 now and 25 years takes me to 85 BEFORE I have to worry about the food expiring. Ammo is cheap again so I got some more. I feel a little better. We lost a couple people from the plan who think now that Trump is president our problems are over. "Rolls eyes" What if Trump gets shot? I am more concerned now than I ever was. We have a small band of like minded people still but have dropped to 6 men and 4 women who are capable. I am working on trying to find at least 4 more men who have some training to bug out to our place. I did gain a new friend across the lake last year and he is a hunter type, well armed but wont stock ammo. So Im adding few rounds in his calibers. He still thinks he can whittle his way out of any problem. He is capable but he has a wife and son who are not. I will be working on him all winter.

Logistics , Logistics , Logistics. Resupply. A lot has been said in this thread about resupply and it can not be stated enough that a car is useless without gas, an empty gun is a club and a starving human is pretty much useless. The Germans found out at Stalingrad what a dug in group of people defending their homes was like. Miles and miles from friendly resupply . Hitlers biggest mistake was invading Russia. He depleted his armies resupply to the point that his tanks ran out of gas, his troops ran out of ammo and food. I do not for one minute believe that the average scavenger is going to think about resupply. He is on the move looking to take easy stuff from empty homes. The truth is? If the homes are empty so are the cupboards . Yes there might be a can of dog food here and there, some tuna, grannies old preserves and a quart of oil. But to be a real threat a predator group needs resupply . Steady piles of ammo, gas, food, water , boots coats gloves hats . They have to carry everything. Just a change of socks takes up space in the ruck.

I trained for 6 years with guys who went to war and they have me convinced that I cant carry enough to run out into the woods and survive more than a few months. They all admitted that without air drops, convoys bringing them implement s of war they would be overrun quickly by locals who have all these things. RESUPPLY is everything. An empty rifle is dead weight.

Sand bags , was touched on a few pages back. My old Militia guys say the older burlap bags that are treated with that stinky sticky ammonia crap are the best. They stay in place and dont leak as bad as the plastic ones when shot full of holes. Anyone have something to add on sand bags? I need several hundred for fortifications on my property if the need ever arise. I am getting ready to order and am looking at the treated burlap Military grade. olive drab treated.

Mixing the sandbag fill with a 90% soil: 5%-10% cement mix will harden the soil in the bags which will improve ballistic resistance, and help maintain the structural integrity of the sandbag emplacement well after the burlap / hessian / polypropylene bags deteriorate.

Make a slurry of cement and painting it on like stucco to the exterior facings of the sandbag emplacement exposed to the weather will also extend the life of the sandbags....mixing in different oxides (green / brown) in separate buckets and daubing it on in irregular patterns will improve camouflaging of the position.

Here is an improvised sanbag filler

I wish I could claim genius for the suggestion....but I learned that trick as an Officer/Snr NCO Infantry Assault Pioneer course student in the mid 1970's, No need to add water to the mix...the cement will absorb the moisture from the soil fill and from the surrounding soil.
