Talk to me about the Paleo diet?

I need to get my health under control. Been eating way too much fast food these past 2 years.

I was looking at the Paleo diet template and with a few weeks I do think it will fit nicely.
I hate peanuts and peanut butter but love other types of nuts like almonds etc. I do enjoy a good heardey meal of red meat and this will put a damper on my soda/red bull consumption.

The concern I have is that next month I will be kicking off my cross fit schedule. Now that a year later I got boss #1 to cool it and pick certain days out of the week instead of wherever she feels like putting me. Boss #2 is the new job that is finally stabilizing my income so I can actually do something.
I want to know how this kind of a diet will fit into actual exercise. Will I be shorting myself when it comes to the nutrition I need to build muscle? Will I just loose weight and not gain endurance? Will I just straight up pass out?

    Google wasn't much help.

    Please and thank you

I was looking hard at it too, but it would seem that the neanderthals just ate what was available to them, according to a study of tartar off their teeth. I've been doing lots of walking, low fat, no soda, low low sugar and high protein and the weight is coming off and the energy levels are rising. I'll guess it will be a bit different for everyone.

From what i can tell its more based on the idea of not eating processed foods that are high in sugar, fat, salt etc.

CS, in response to your questions above, you will benefit from getting away from all the sugars you are eating. A couple of years ago I adopted the Primal/Paleo lifestyle and with a few months I had dropped about 30 lbs with only moderate uptick on physical activity. Getting off the fast food, sugary drinks, potatoes, rice and so on will greatly improve your physical health... and the weight will just slip off. I was amazed at how just the simple dietary change affected my weight.

As a side note, you may pass out when it is donut day at the office..... !!!!!!
The hardest thing about Paleo and Primal.... is the mental fortitude to not slip and fall back to old eating habits. If you follow the Primal plan (which I am more familiar with over others), you will balance out at some point with weight loss and muscle gain (plateau). For me it was just about 200 lbs where I could not loose anymore weight, because I was adding muscle.

It is a fun process and is made easier if your partner is on board with the plan!!!!!!

I & my DH eat low carb, High fat, Primal ( Paleo but with dairy)
Paleo is basicly eating real food, ie. grow it (except grains) or hunt it, OK. Comes in a plastic container... not ok.
Focus on lots of veg & good quality meat/fish, butter, coconut oil etc
Avoid Sugar, grains, chemicals, anything prossessed, packaged or with an ingredient "list"

When we first swiched to primal, I lost 50lbs without even trying and my DH who was high BS level diabetic at the time, no longer test as diabetic... at all, even if he does ocasionally eat something he shouldent. (& boy hasent that put the dr's in a snit because supposedly your not alowed to "cure" diabeties)

I also find that Im good with one meal a day (supper) & dont really get hungry till close to suppertime, no lack of energy even though I work a fairly physically demanding job.
DH does need to eat more often but thats just him. :)

A fair number of folks here have gone for the Primal Blueprint instead of the Paleo. Not a lot of difference but some.

Last uear at this time I lost 40 lbs on the Primal Blue Print lifestyle. No heavy exercise Sissons model is move slowly and lift heavy thing....then run like a bear is chasing you every once in a while.

This is the classic example of what this lifestyle can do for you

No bread or pasta but almond flour products are great. We just found some great almond flour tortillas to eat with my homemade pork chorizo

I did the Paleo-diet for a few months about 10 years ago and was doing Crossfit too, and I was in my 50's then. Now I work in my garden with no power tools and try to hike and walk as much as possible for my exercise. Walking is probably the most underrated exercise known to humans. It alone will increase your core strength to incredible heights, arm strength and hand strength too. It is what our bodies are designed to do - walk.
Remember, Otzi the Iceman who was found in 1991 after being frozen in the Alps for over 5,000 years, before his untimely death he breathed clean air, drank pure water, ate food that was untainted by herbicide, pesticides, and was non-GMO. Autopsy results on his body showed advanced heart disease, and he walked a lot more than we do too.
It seems our bodies begin to decay at about 18, and it's downhill from there. How fast you go downhill depends on heredity, diet and exercise, but all you can do is slow down the ageing process.
Removing fast food and replacing it with something more wholesome is a positive step to slowing down the decay, as is exercise. Good luck with you regime!

When I retired from the service I gained a bunch of weight because I had experienced a sudden life style change. I was used to consuming a lot of calories and such to keep up with the energy needs of my body. I was forced to choose a new diet and After much consideration, I found Primal was the best fit for my body needs. I also discovered some serious health concerns when I made the switch, most I have found were connected with GMO type foods and SUGER. Once I got away from them and all the other processed foods, my weight and health improved remarkably. I found my digestive system was unable to process things like Corn and tomato skin, as well as modified seeds and grains and I was basically having constant G.I. tract infections of one type or another. Sugar's were changing my "Burn Rate" so fast the I was adding pounds when I should have been burning off what I was consuming. Once I found these things and removed them, it was like a light switch had been thrown! I am back to "fighting weight" and have actually added muscle despite the fact I am no longer doing the extreamly high energy activities I used to do.

Amazing what just dropping soda and canned/bottled drinks did for me. Replaced them with Water, unsweet tea and coffee and lost 78 pounds over the course of a year. Down to a lean 265 pounds now. That 340 pounds was killing my ankles and knees. I could probably stand to drop another 20 pounds excess fat but it ain't going to kill me one way or the other.

ditch witch I do stupid crap, so you don't have to

I eat more veg on paleo than I EVER did on any other so-called "healthy diet". My total carbs run between 50-100 a day, that's mostly from veg. IDK why you think you will pass out on it. It isn't like Atkins. I took up Tae Kwon Do and MMA training when I went primal/paleo, as well as started lifting weights. I had waaay more energy/endurance than I'd ever had before, and that was despite being old and fat, ha. In the past I'd tried to adhere to the low fat, lots of salads, etc diets and I was always starving and never had any energy.

Healthwise I kissed my allergies, asthma, acid reflux, chronic joint pain, and chronic fatigue goodbye. Apparently I have issues with wheat.

The hardest part, IMO, is that you have to actually COOK. Like, a lot. Which is ok, I love to cook, but I hate dealing with dirty dishes and they seem to rack up fast these days.

The concern with passing out comes from the fact that I will be dropping most sugar, and it is hard to eat enough vegetables to keep up with energy consumption as the main good group in this diet is greens not breads.
I think I can make it work. Gradually cut out soft drinks, write up a yes and no food chart and find recipes that fit.

Your body isent actually optimally designed to run off sugar.. It can do & most people are adapted to using sugar/carbs as an energy source due to the SAD (standard american diet) but that's where you get the energy spike & then crash issues.
Once your body adjust to using fat as its primary energy source you will get a much more steady energy level without the sugar crashes.
Just be aware that if you are used to using sugar/carbs for energy, there is an adjustment period & you might feel crap for a few days till your body "remembers" how to tap into the fat burning juju.

I never had a problem but my DH thought he was gonna die (OK, not really but men can be such whingers :p )

You will definitely get the carb flu once you lay off all of the breads, potatoes and such..... it last about a week. Takes a couple of weeks once you start eating right, then your body gets cranky with you while it adjust to the new dietary intake. ;)

You would not have wanted to meet me at basic mil training.
I went cold turkey on caffeine, sugar and bread, anything enjoyable really. Talk about pain.
I actually drank a soda when I got a free day and it made me SICK.
