Billionaires are stockpiling land that could be used in the apocalypse — here's where they're going

A rising number of American billionaires are channeling their inner Bear Grylls — some in preparation for an apocalyptic event, be it a viral epidemic, nuclear war, or cataclysmic pole shift.

Reid Hoffman, the cofounder of LinkedIn and a notable investor, told The New Yorker earlier this year he estimated that more than 50% of Silicon Valley billionaires had bought some level of "apocalypse insurance," like an underground bunker.

A new article in Forbes suggests the super rich are making significant land grabs in America's heartland, where the climate is mild and the locations are conducive to survivalism, farming, and living on the land. States like Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming are home to several fortified shelters and vacation homes where wealthy billionaires could happily live out their post-doomsday (or retirement) days.

According to Jim Dobson, a Forbes contributor, lots of billionaires have private planes "ready to depart at a moment's notice." They also own motorcycles, weaponry, and generators.

None of the billionaires named by Forbes has said publicly that their vast amounts of land would be used for apocalypse preparations — though they certainly would make good hideouts.

John Malone, who made his fortune in cable and communications, is the nation's biggest individual landowner with 2.2 million acres across six states, including huge swaths of Maine and New Hampshire. Malone told Forbes in 2011 that he made the land grabs as an investment. He said he loves to fish and occasionally hunt birds on his properties.

The media mogul Ted Turner, the second-biggest individual landowner in the US, owns 2 million acres across Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, and South Dakota.

Philip Anschutz, a railroad and oil magnate, locked down 434,000 acres in Wyoming. Amazon's Jeff Bezos has 400,000 acres in Texas. And Stan Kroenke, the owner of a massive sports-and-entertainment holding company, bought 225,000 acres in Montana.

One of the more surprising real-estate tycoons is David Hall, a Mormon engineer, who has been snapping up farmland in Vermont. He wants to build sustainable, high-density communities based on the writings of the religious figure Joseph Smith.

In the event of the end of the world, the world's financial leaders may be the most prepared.

How are you going to use land after teotwawki if some of its in ND and the rest in TX?
I don't know if they will be the best prepared but they will have spent the most money that's for sure.

They may own it but come TEOTWAWKI, it won't matter....

I would hate to see what the property taxes are on that much property....

I'd forgotten about that, but the reason I posted was because it details some of the areas these wealthy people consider to be safer than others. It will be interesting to see of post SHTF if they can control some of their enormous holdings.

Fair point and wasn't poking, more calling attention to the fact that unless this was posted in March (and I didn't follow the link, sorry), it's kind of proof positive that more and more are doing it. And it's interesting that media of any kind isn't calling the ultra wealthy/billionaires whack jobs.

As long as they aren't financing the construction of three Mega Arks being built in the Himalayan Mountains, I guess we are OK.

Can you imagine a bunch of spoiled little rich kids tying to get along with each other? They'll never make it.

There is Money, and there is earned Skill, rarely do these too ever come together in a meaningful manor! The thing I see is these Bizzilinars are in a sort of panic mode, trying to protect what they have RIGHT NOW, and hoping to preserve that for the near future, what I also see is an utter lack of skill and common sence from these people. Some very savvy business people are raking in a fortune "advising" these sheeple in to what to spend money on and how to prep! Come the storm, these folks will be a very minor concern to most of US, the money will have little value, and trade goods might be ok, but the sheeple will have no idea how to live post event, and how to carry on, let alone what to do with all their useless crap they were sold and none of US would really want!

I do not believe they will make it. I read a survival book about rich people in a shelter/bunker. When the bunker failed, they did not survive. These rich people are still expecting things to be taken care for them. Lots of land will need a small army to protect the livestock roaming on it.

I hope they leave the door open so we can "borrow" some of their stuff once they die off......

Owning land and HOLDING land is two different things! As to why, go look at UN Agenda 21, which Red Ted publicly supports and admitted that was why he was doing what he was doing. Taxes? The land is in trusts, they don't pay taxes.

The richest man in the US owned most of California before they found gold in 1848-9. He owned hundreds of millions of acres of land, millions of head of cattle, horses, pigs, you name it, he owned it. Then they found gold, and all of his land was stolen, his horses rustled, his pigs eaten, and his cattle butchered. He was wiped out, given a small pension from the state that barely covered a card board box and a free Salvation Army meal every day, and died penniless. Go look it up.

Yes Dunerunner, I know they didn't have card board boxes or Sal. Army back then, it was an example. Get over it.

But they do, at least the trust pays the taxes due on the property. If there is any income from the trust that is distributed, then the beneficiary pays the tax. If there is income to the trust that is not distributed, then the trust pays.

NB: There is a world of difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion.

I expect they will have a private security force, cooks, servants, and other various workers. They better have a bunch of gold and silver on site because dollars will be worthless if/when it gets to that point - not like there will soon be anything to spend it on. If they haven't thought ahead about food production and preservation for all their staff they won't make it. When they run out of ammunition to defend it that will be gone as well.

Also with a breakdown of services, pandemic/ killer flu is a risk. If an illness hits one of these large ranches then the security force and all the help they hired may not be there to run the place.

I can see a sort of feudal society developing along the lines you describe. A large amount of land with sufficient staff to farm and otherwise support itself with minimal or no external contacts. Whatever becomes a currency between fiefdoms might or might not be what we, in this day and age, consider PMs. Whatever it is, it will be by agreement between fiefs.

If they survive the raiders that will seek them out for food and goods. It wouldn't be too hard to nibble around the edges and draw them out. Take out enough of their security and they become vulnerable.

This train of thought really makes me laugh, WHO in there right mind would stay and "Work" for their masters after SHTF/ TEOTWAWKI. And who is going to risk every thing for some one that only owes them a pay check, let alone think for one second that their needs will be met when their masters are suffering some misfortune or loss! I see a whole lot of land and assets being available for the taking when this comes about!!!
