Fuel Storage

I read from time to time folks saying you can't store gasoline over 6 months, others a year.....just no way longer.

    Baloney.

I regularly store it 3-4 years, and I dug out a drum this afternoon from Aug 2013 (when gas was $3.35/gal here). I normally try to rotate fuel a bit more than that, but I slipped around and let that one get by me. Pretty sure that's the longest I've personally stored gasoline and can vouch for.

I'm getting a delivery in my 500gal tank that I use for stuff around the place, plus fill the car/truck from time to time if it's handier or cheaper than current town prices. Last fill of the big tank was June 2017....and it's an open vented tank.....so it goes 2 years just fine in that type of tank....with preservative.

I DO use, and highly recommend, PRI-G for storage. (4 ounces/55gal when it goes into storage, another 4 per 55gal when I pump it into the 500gal overhead tank) When I cracked that nearly 6 year old drum open, it smelled just like fresh gas....no 'varnishy' smell at all. I put three drums in the big tank, and will have the Co-op fill the rest of it (335gal) with fresh gas (non-ethanol) just to play it safe, but I have used long stored gas directly in vehicles with no problem in the past.

I normally store 6 drums of gasoline, and 9 drums of diesel fuel in addition to whatever is in the gravity feed 500gal gasoline tank and 300 gallon diesel tank.

I think you can push it a bit longer in sealed drums.

Look up my long term fuel storage posts. I'm way beyond 3 years. I still have a couple of the lost cans in the barn, and they must be nearing 7 years old. BG CF5 at 4 ounces to 5 gallons and Stabil at 2x recommended dose seem to work beyond five years. BG claims their CF5 will maintain gasoline "indefinitely."

Here's 37 months. Long term gasoline storage experiment - 37 months

The really old stuff was in a thread called "You can't do that!" Maybe somebody can track it down.

    Nice storage rig. :)

I have used gas stored over two years with no problem. I do add a dose of Stabil Marine every six months or so. Combination of steel and plastic jerrycans.

@TnAndy You think that 'PRI-G' is better than STA-BIL? I ask because I have heard others say so...

Well, I tried Stabil (it was the red version, don't think they had a blue then), and after a year, a drum smelled like varnish. So, yes, I think PRI does a lot better job. That's my experience with them.

I could never find Pri-G locally, else I would have tried it.

If they would get the Ethanol out of Gasoline, and go back to Low Lead, like in high Octane Primium Gasoline, it could be stored in Sealed Drums for at least a year and maybe more...

Our fuel has jumped up 30 cents in a week or so . I stocked all ready .
I hear it might double over summer . then the crash happens , low fuel price is to keep the crap a foat .

Someplace in the past we had some discussions about sealing volatile fuels in drums. Something about over-pressurizing the container and spilling the fuel with obvious (potential) consequences.

Also find it here in quart size bottles that treats 512gal per bottle if you don't need a gallon size jug.

Sta-Bil, for me anyway, has been a 1 year solution. Longer than that the gas starts smelling bad. I have some 2 cycle mix from 2014 that I just smelled after reading this thread and it smells fine, but had PRI-G, I quit using Sta-Bil after discovering PRI-G and D. BTW, my portable diesel 15k genny has PRI-D and diesel from around 2015 or so, last time I topped it off, and it cranked fine two weeks ago for it's monthly exercise.

Yeah, that's what I found with Stabil as well....about a year, even in sealed 55gal drum. That's why I was leery of PRI claims at first, but after couple decades of using it, I'm convinced it's really good stuff.

@Motomom34 , thank you for digging that up. My low tech burning brick gasoline test starts on post 63. The gas, in a plastic 5 gallon can, that had been treated with 5.5 ounces of BG CF5 was six years old and ran just fine in my car.

I have at least one more can of the same vintage, so when it hits seven years old I'll test it.
