Yes it was put away for an event that was a non event.
Yeast is a bit hard to find now and our current stuff is several years old and spent most of that time in the Fridge.
Last night DW loaded up the Bread Making Machine (BMM) and all we produced was a sweet small very doughy loaf.
Out I went to recover the two1/4 lb packs laying on a work table in the garage. They have been there since 2004 when we moved into the "Big House".
One pack already had a small X slice at the top of the foil pack and I poured about a tea spoon into a glass measuring cup which was 3/4 full of warm water. We added a teaspoon of sugar stirred and sure enough we have a perfect bloom in 15 minutes.
Prepping from1999 and I bet some would say we were hoarding, but really it was a Test Batch just to see how well it stored. YMMV

Well in recent history multi hundred year old yeast was brought back to make ancient beer and bread recipes.
And this was just stuff found in the bottom of those old timy vases they used for sea trade. Not packaged for storage.

if it was sealed in amphoras or amphorae that were intact either on solid ground or perhaps underwater there is a chance it might still be viable or can possibly be revived under the proper conditions

Yes best conditions as it was sealed in a tomb, dry stable conditions.

Now my yeast was opened by me back in 2000 to make bread. Then left alone in a hot/cold/open air and dampness and shuffled around a workbench for 20 years.

I am amazed that WAL-MART was out of yeast on day one and has not restocked. Why? I have never seen mine out of bread.

All the non peppers suddenly became bakers.
From the suppliers they have said it takes time to produce a large quantity as you can't just crank up a batch, it takes time.

It will be presaged by yet one more house investigation/impeachment trial of the Pres/VP/some other high placed Conservative. To protect the chillins don't ya know.It still amazes me that there is a shortage of toilet paper but ROPE is plentiful everywhere.

Dunno if the trigger event will be political, social, or economic. No matter which, the one will kick off the other two. Might very well be that some odd alliances pop up, and one side won't be able to tell itself from the other without uniforms. Snowflake screetching will be the tipoff of imminent fighting in the streets.

Un-used rope. Just like the wimperers would like it.

This is actually really good info. Thanks for sharing and for describing the process of reanimating your yeast.

There is alot about bread adn yeast ... Some really great ideas.

Putting sugar with the yeast is called 'proofing' the yeast

Instant dry yeast donest need it. Active dry yeast must be reactivated by proofing in warm water, or the bread won't rise adequately. Late to the party but, YOU DO NOT need to “prove” (as it was called way back when) yeast BEFORE using it UNLESS you are unsure of it.

You can proof with milk or honey if you dont have sugar
