Portland's roads are awful. They have very few lanes for the amount of people living in the surrounding areas. I think that is while the train is so popular in that area. Every time I have gone to tat area, the train is always packed. And if the big one hits during business hours, those people will have no train to ride home.

The roads are intentionally neglected to discourage use of personal vehicles. Portland can build a fancy suspension bridge for foot, bicycle, and light rail; they can put bike lanes and paths everywhere, but will not address simple things like potholes. Cars are heavily frowned upon except for a Prius or Leaf with a Bernie or Hillary sticker.

When I worked in one of the medical centers up on "Pill Hill" they initially refused parking (they were heavily pushing public transportation) and told me they would give me unlimited Tri-Met passes. I told them no problem, but when there was an after hours emergency I would still take the bus. It might take me a couple of hours to get there, but I would get there eventually even if I had to wait for the buses to start running in the morning. I got my parking pass. At that time people would come to work a few hours early to take one of the rare public parking spots then catch a nap. Had they taken the bus most would have had to leave their house even earlier.

    Lord, I love telecommuting.

Two days ago a 5.7 earthquake hit again at just 8km. from surface. It was a strong movement earthquake since it is a low depth epicenter. But we felt it very strong here because our soil is sand. On large 7.8 earthquake last year two hospitals were destroyed so people in Oregon coast expect one or several to be destroyed.

Oh yeah, shake and quake! I've lived through 4 biggies, myself:
1989 Oakland, CA, the Loma Prieta quake (photo on 1st page, courtesy of Dunerunner). Only ~17 seconds long, but what a ride!
1993 Guam (USA, Marianas Islands area, western Pacific). That one lasted 60 seconds. Longest minute of my life! Luckily, Guam is prepared for typhoons, with most buildings being reinforced concrete.
1996 Adak Island, Alaska (Aleutian Islands chain). Worked there for a year, before the Navy shut down their base there. The housing was built on earthquake shock mounts, so it took a few seconds, before I realized what was going on. Drawers and cabinet doors were opening and closing, like a poltergeist had invaded....but was caused by the house swaying back and forth, on the shock mounts! Definitely surreal...

But, like most natural disasters, the areas that suffer them won't bother making the building requirements, designed to withstand it, refuse to make those codes mandatory. Typically, due to the higher cost required to fulfill them.

The recent Mexico earthquake of 8.1 September 7 and today´s 7.1 confirms what I had been saying on this post. Read at begining of post to understand what I mean.SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PREPARE FOR A BIG EARTHQUAKE COMING soon.

Look for it to possibly happen during the next geomagnetic storm.
Which could hit in the next 7 to 14 days.

Coming soon? This is a catch all phrase that means nothing. A "big" earthquake could come in one year and you would then say "I told you so". And what is big? They just had a 3.6 the other day...was that big? You have no way of predicting when an earthquake will strike and you have no way to make a causality link between the Mexican earthquake and a future California earthquake. In fact, your so called predictions are so vague that you would be able to link any two events in the world.

So here is my prediction which is going to be much more detailed than yours...there will be no earthquake ANYWHERE in California over 6.7 between 1530 Mountain time on September 19, 2017 and 2359 Mountain time on December 31, 2017.

Watch terrifying video of today's earthquake in Mexico. Watching it terrified me. I tell you if you experience one of these monsters you will never forget it.

Imasham I think you should read my post carefully because you will not find the word ¨predict¨ anywhere. My post is about reminding people that if you live in an earthquake zone you should take precautionary measures. I am not a geologist or specialist on the field.so I am making an educated guess. Mexico city is on top of a layer of sandy soil. The worst for earthquakes.

Pops on video are power line transformers.

LA Times today's article. Scientists do make educated guess.
California could be hit by an 8.2 mega-earthquake, and it would be catastrophic

Virtually everyone knows that California will eventually have a big earthquake. So your post, while repetitive, does not add anything to anyone's knowledge. Everyone should prepare however, that's a fact.

The headline you quoted and the story...is an educated guess.

Your words: that you "have studied earthquakes and its effects on structures for several decades" (which you now back away from by stating you are not a specialist) plus your warning that a big earthquake is "coming soon" plus your statement that Oregon should "expect to have one or several" hospitals destroyed plus your declaration that the Mexican earthquake confirms all you've been saying...all of these statements moved your so-called educated guess to the prediction side of the equation.

I have absolutely no training in geology or earthquakes or in any related discipline and even I can make an educated guess that an 8.2 earthquake in California would be catastrophic.

An 8.2 earthquake in any major population center would be very bad.

Are you thinking to move to Cali? Your interest in Cali geology seems a bit misplaced if not. There's some helluva good scenery there, but nothing else worth the visit, much less a residence. Other than the excessive warmth, seems to me like Ecuador is a safer place all around.

An 8.1 in Commiefornia would be just what Eddie Boy has been asking his questions about... Oh Well, "Life would be tough, and then, a lot of folks would die...". Just one of those things...

I used to live in California and loved it but that was several decades ago and now there are just to many people living there. Ecuador is beautiful and really cheap. Most food is natural. This is earthquake country with several active volcanoes. A lot of rivers and snow caped volcanoes and kind of similar to New Zealand.

Yes Imasham I have studied earthquakes for several decades and its effects on structures. I am not a geoscientist or structural engineer. I do however study on my own structural engineering with an emphasis on seismic design. Several citations of my story were quotations from scientists in newspapers and engineering studies. I made an educated guess similar to what scientist have done in studies. There is no scientific method that predicts geological events. You are not obliged to read my article or any other.

Saying California is going to have a earthquake is like saying Florida is going to have a hurricane.
Well duha, to both. It's only a matter of time.

I know the subject is repetitive but according to California Emergency Management most people are not prepared. Here is LA Times article the second this week on the subject. Look in google maps to see how a few million built homes right on the San Andreas fault and other seismic faults. I just saw it last night and was shocked. I am not going to California even if I get free plane ticket. No way.
After Mexico Quake, California Urges Residents to Prepare for ‘The Big One’
Mexico earthquake scares Californians, but are they prepared?

Being prepared for unknown eventualities isn't such a bad thing. Up in my AOA, we are constantly reminded to be prepared for an eventual Tsunami. The list of necessary items fills one full page of the local news paper that we get twice a week. Yes, it is a possibility. Does constantly reminding people work? I personally feel that it creates an attitude that they have heard to perp for forty years and nothing has happened, so why prep at all?
