I am somewhat new to the idea of prepping and i am building my @ home kit.

my question is do i need a gas/NBC mask? if so what do you recommend and why? would it make more sense to have one in my get home bag/ truck bag?

    thanks,
    gunbartender.

If you are just starting to prep, leave the NBC masks for later. Do add some dust masks to your supplies. Water, first aid supplies, and food come first.

Israeli masks are probably the cheapest(and good) at present. If you get military stay away from the type you have to remove the mask to replace the filter. Get the screw on type that carries the "universal" type filters. Get a few extra filters also. As time allows you may even want to pick up a self contained supply rig. The positive pressure type is more desirable. That way even if you do not have a perfect seal it still pushes a slight bit of air to keep you from creating a negative pressure. In lieu of masks get several big jars of Vaseline, non vented goggles, and simple dust masks. They will not keep out CS from your lungs but the Vaseline rubbed liberally under arms and any other "wet" place will keep you from blistering and burning so badly. In the event of poisonous gasses or fallout the best thing is to get out of the area immediately. Fallout is not as dangerous as gasses if you are ready for it. We often have classes on masks/preps and if you can attend the gathering in Oct. will try to have one planned. Let us know asap what you want/need. All "classes" are free and if you have an area of expertise we would love to have you share.

Potassium iodide, several masks, filters -all are wise choices. Especially if you live within 50 miles of a nuclear power station. I live within 5 miles of one.

Yeah. Stay away from the Russian masks and don't waste your money on expensive civilian models. The rest is negotiable.

    fortunateson I hate Illinois Nazis!

I'd say yes, buy them if you live in a city.
That's in case of a dirty bomb or chemical attack.
If you live near any kind of chemical facility they're a good idea as well. Accidents happen.

+1 to the Potassium iodate / iodide
