I can post a lot about the fresh produce grown since this is the bread basket of panama and take photos of some of the natural places like the rivers and hot springs that abound. Thank you for the welcome and the Krishnamurti quote is one of my all time faves which is why I left the U.S. it was getting too crazy for me I didnt find it healthful so thank Goodness for my Dad(former VP at Chase) having introduced me as a child to The VI, Europe and Latin America. My Dad is really proud of me he hated his job corporate America and was lucky enough to be sent abroad and was much happier. He lives in Idaho now and visits me. I love him very much and am so grateful for having lived abroad as a child.

I agree that everyone has the right to bear arms and I certainly don\t think guns are the cause of the violent American culture-hatred and lack of community is, guns are used to cause harm as a result. However ,I myself do not feel safe with a gun. End of Story. I have a big dog too just not a rottweiller i don\t like them big and stupid. BUt I am a Huge dog fan just not rottweiller\s. I even love pit bulls. I don't like dalmations-nuts rottweillers crazy and doberman agressive because their skulls are too small for their brains due to inbreeding. But to start with, @Tracy is also known as Miss Sunshine. She is always a pleasure to be around, and if you can find her offensive, then the problem is yours.
This is a "Preppers" site, (meaning those who prepare) for those who chose to be as self reliant as they can be. This means we can cut ties with the mainstream and coast through whatever problems hit, like flood, power outages, or food shortages. We can operate without the grid as needed. But for these solar systems, the best/cost effective systems are "battery banked with grid tied", meaning using solar and selling off excess power, or using grid power when needed. It is cheaper. (Some folks even leave their Batteries dry and in storage, until some major issue requires them to cut grid power.)
There are young folks here, but the vast majority are older, and more mature, (believe it or not) because to become the experts in many fields you will find here, it requires time , training, and practice. (You think YOU have survival skills?you are just a babe in the woods, literally.!! You live in a climate that forgives almost every error you could make. You have a great deal to learn, and thankfully, you have the time to do so, being young.
You do not have a gun or any real weapons training? You are scary, and have a boxcutter.....that might be good enough on a plane where no one else has a weapon, or any training, but not against anyone who means to take you or what you have. You would not stand a chance against even the average unarmed man, and if he had a stick. He could knock you out without even getting in reach. (Then you're done for.) Take this as a reality check, because you have no real defense.
In the responses you received, I saw nothing mean or hateful, just playful. We have a strong streak of humor here (thank God) and very friendly open people willing to help, and share knowledge. Your responses, however, did include calling people names, stupid, even insulting. I will admit that I know little about South of the border. I have never been and never desired to go there except for a place in Southern Mexico that is known for their stone (marble) and old fashion ways. I am curious about the locals and their attitude towards Americans. IMO or what I have heard, many of the Mexicans like American money but not Americans. Then you posted that below.

Interesting. I do wonder if Americans elect Trump and they seal the border, start deporting heavily, how that would affect those Americans living South of the border. Many Hispanics work in the US and send money South. Mexicans, Middle Americans etc depend on those dollars flowing South. The people in Panama may be nice now but if the border is sealed or if the economy collapses, I do wonder how they would like you then.

BTW- In Belize there is a development that was advertising for Americans. I recall an ad that used to play on Glenn Beck.

Really @kellory? Some people do not like guns. They don't want them period. Think outside the box of how would you defend yourself/ keep safe if you didn't have a gun. There are ways. IMO if someone doesn't want a gun, I respect them for admitting that. If they have no interest in owning one then they shouldn't. @Motomom34 , read all the words I wrote. Don't cherrypick words to offend you. I did NOT say you need a gun, I said a boxcutter and a scary look is not a defense. My preferred weapon happens to be a staff, which has several feet of reach over any boxcutter, two ends, and does a lot more damage, quickly. Looks like a standard walking stick as well, and would do her a lot more good than a boxcutter, or even the "ponytail of Fury".

There are all sorts of people here. I think your post showed that you are a free-spirited but want to live off-grid, learn to live off the land and more. Other people took it another way -- and some are wary of newcomers, but don't let that bother you. I read the "jokes" and they thought that you were from somewhere else (maybe a lure).
Anyway, I have found a lot of useful things. If there is a thread that doesn't answer you questions, start one obviously. If there is something that you are already doing (whether it be solar power, emergency preps, canning, learning to fish) feel free to share it in the appropriate area. You will find that people will ask more questions, as well as have opinions as to other ways to accomplish the same thing (some find one "right"way) but most realize that there is more than 1 way to do things. That is always what I tell my daughter.

Almost all preppers have some interest in going off grid if possible down the road because many of us agree some sort of major upheaval will occur in the next few years at the most. Whether it be a race war orchestrated by fools like Obama, or a Constitutional revolt, or a (most likely - say's me) financial collapse of US dollar and Hyper inflation.

Preppers believe in many things. Self reliance, independence, freedom, liberty, tolerance of others rights, protection, family and community, care of mother earth but not with irrational detriment to man, etc etc
.
Would love to hear about steps you have taken to provide a clean constant source of water, gardening, cooking, livestock you may have, structures and infrastructure to support your off grid aspirations.
