On another forum there was a fellow that was being neighborly and let his neighbor use his generator, by the time it was returned it had been passed around others and was shot. run out of oil an seized up dead. People with nothing invested do not take care of equipment . Car rentals are another good example.
. The difference is in some communities when the hope of help coming is not far off being helpful is not so bad , but in an event you see no end in sight like Venezuela charity begins at home . no help is coming..
People out side your home do not care if you live or die ,no matter how generous you might have been, they are in no position to compensate your good intentions.. .Look at this from a real event , those who did not prepare are now flooding our borders for a free lunch and health care and any thing else they an get free .
Can I make it any clearer ?

In the event that this happens, you need to become a liar. You lie to save your life and you lie to save your preps. You will become just like them. You do not wash, you don't not brush your teeth. The smells coming from your apartment should not smell pleasant. No matter what, when someone knocks on your door to ask if you have water or food, when you open the door you should stink and your apartment should smell like a sewer. Yes, having a waste bucket closer to the door will help push the smells into the hall. You may actually be fine but giving people the illusion that you are worse off will act as a deterrent to buy you some time and hopefully keep you safe. .

Motomom or anyone else, this is a serious question based on your comments below: Is there a product on the market that you can just spray or put on yourself that will make you literally stink temporarily for these TEOTWAWKI/SHTF moments?

Plus a little bit of coconut oil in your hair will give you the greasy look.

I'd move. Considering double occupancy of each unit. 1 of you. 138 of them. Your 2 month supply is now 2 days.
you won't be able to cook without alerting the neighbors.
that place is going to become a cesspool, no water = germ city.
Not sure of the construction for your building, if the walls are solid concrete then you only have your door to worry about. Around here walls are just a minor annoyance. box cutter and 30 seconds, I'm in like flint through the 16 inch wide gap into your living room .. surprise. Drywall looks substantial but it's just paper and some chalk.

How about you just move further out of the city where population density is just a bit lower .. like 10 people per acre instead of 400 per acre. Your chances of survival greatly improve.

by some of these replies to this totally unplausible posting scenario >>>> some of you desperately need to read Selco's adventures of surviving the Balkan War in an urban situation - some of you wouldn't have lasted 10 minutes of 1968 riot ...

The homeless pass on information all the time almost as fast as the internet.
Free stuff is long sought after ,looking at the refugees from the south is enough evidence of their determination to get a free life.
People from Venezuela don't want jobs, they want free stuff. just like they got with socialism.
Point is, look at the distance people will travel to get it.
So your in the boonies and the little kids are sent to your door to beg food . they know your home because they have seen signs of life from a distance . They make camp on you door step. A sniper waits in the tree line waiting for the door to open. He doesn't have to see the target but assume the occupant is behind the door as it is opened .
    I digress ,
If I feel compelled to help some one ,it is done so that I am not attached to the gift, if it is at all possible.
As a kid mom did her grocery shopping and often have me take a box of food to some ones door and leave it . It was something God compelled her to do . This way, those we knew in need, were not at our door begging , and had only God to thank for their gifts.
